It all started in the early '80's with the vision of Steve Saleen, a former professional Formula Atlantic race car driver, and has evolved into a racing team and company synonymous with powerful, and fast Ford based vehicles. We are fortunate to have this true, low mileage, one family owned Saleen S281 in our showroom. Backed into its spot with the rows of other vehicles in our showroom, at first glance the Saleen looks like a clean 'Mineral Gray Metallic' fourth generation Mustang. Taking a closer look reveals much more is going on with this Ford based sports car.

This trick 'Saleen Silver' S281 rolled out of Saleen's new production facility in Irvine California just a year after the introduction of the Saleen S7 - a true supercar that won multiple GT championships and even set a record at the prestigious LeMans track. So to say that the team who developed the S281 had a few tricks up their sleeves is certainly true. Extra cooling ducts, brake ducts, sharper lines on the front and rear bumpers and a lower profile rear spoiler help set this car apart from a production Ford Mustang. Oh...and the large letters embossed in the rear bumper spelling out Saleen kind of give away that this car has some special features. A few eagle-eyed readers may have noticed the “317” sticker placed on the front bumper just below the driver's side headlight. This is car number 317 in the production run of 466 supercharged S281 vehicles made for 2001.

Inside this S281, the trim is pretty close to the standard Mustang GT trim. A few tasteful changes remind you that you are not in a standard Mustang. A gauge cluster sits atop the dash where a small digital clock used to be, a billet aluminum shift knob takes the place of the stock plastic unit, 'Saleen' aluminum pedal pads cover the three pedals in the footwell, and white faced gauges help keep tabs on the engine. Other than the aforementioned upgrades, the interior is the familiar Mustang interior.

Atop the 4.6L V8 sits a Roots-style Supercharger which gives a small hint of what the engine consists of internally. Many people believe that Saleen just adds decals, a few bolt on engine parts, and a few aero parts. They actually change quite a lot within the powerplants of the vehicles that roll out of their factory. The Saleen cars are very well built and very capable performance machines. The S281 cars have a nice list of performance parts working together in the engine room: forged steel crank, forged steel rods, forged aluminum pistons, aluminum heads, Saleen spec camshafts, upgraded valve springs, 90mm mass air flow sensor, Saleen intake manifold, water to air intercooler, hi flow fuel pump and injectors, and 2.5” stainless steel exhaust with x-pipe. A short throw shifter helps give the driver control while shaving time off each shift. Not only are there plenty of modifications under the hood, but the suspension has been upgraded by Saleen. Racecraft N2 shocks and struts, Saleen variable rate springs, and large stabilizer bars front and rear give this car excellent, race inspired handling. 18”x9” (front) and 18”x10” (rear) Saleen five spoke wheels wrapped in sticky tires do their best to help keep the power under control and the car in a straight trajectory.

In Saleens marketing, they mention that the best way to put into perspective the ride in a Saleen is “Hang On!” They go on to say that S281's “have phenomenal traction”, “white knuckle speed”, and can cause “chest pounding heartbeat and sweaty palms.” After driving this S281, we have to agree with Saleen's assessment!
