In a real sense, every sports car ever made owes a debt to the British two-seaters that delighted American servicemen during World War II. The open-air, hug-the-curves, small two-seater driving experience captivated the Yanks, even as the soldiers' often-enthusiastic driving styles sometimes drew disapproving frowns from the local populace. Among British sports cars, the MG brand was by far the most successful, and that success exploded in 1962 with the launch of the MGB. Over the next eighteen years more than a half-million MGBs would be built at the company's Abingdon, England works.
 
The timeless appeal of an MGB is driven by its compelling combination of characteristics. Foremost among them is the pure driving experience, especially in the roadsters. Visually, the car's design aesthetic has not lost any of its captivating delight to this day. The interiors of the cars have a cockpit-like focus with their crisp Smiths gauges, overall simplicity, and classic British style with just enough creature comfort to make long drives fun. From an owner-involvement standpoint, the ability to easily source replacement parts from multiple suppliers combined with the model's straightforward, serviceable mechanicals meant “driveway mechanics” could be just that. The many MG owners clubs attest to the model's special emotional connection. MGB owners always wave when they meet each other on the open road.
 
The 1965 MGB roadster offered here is a stunning, fully restored example in Iris Blue paint over black vinyl interior. It is a collector-desired “transition” car featuring the stronger 5-bearing engine and pull-type door handles. A certified copy of this car's factory record, issued by the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust, confirms that the vehicle identification, engine and body numbers found on the car all match those assigned at the factory.

Its 2015 restoration and subsequent modifications took a low-mileage MGB to a high degree of execution with an eye toward maintaining its essential originality, while improving reliability and safety. (The restoration work was performed by a retired racecar designer-mechanic in Indianapolis; see photos.) The original and rebuilt 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine was built with a keen eye for original detail, and the rest of the car is simply beautiful. The exterior color is original to the car and matches the color of the MGB that the British Motor Corporation introduced to the American public on the November 1962 cover of Road & Track magazine.The Robbins black cloth convertible top/boot (with '71- '80 frame) improves the car's already great curb appeal and ease of use. The Tourist Trophy exhaust system sounds fantastic. Most compelling of all, the car's restoration and subsequent modifications are fully documented, with photos, invoices and other documentation accompanying the car. A host of accessories are included: the original-equipment convertible top and frame, the original steering wheel, the original radiator (an aluminum upgraded radiator is installed), tonneau cover, custom individual roll bars, chrome fire extinguisher, car cover, floor jack and more. This is an exceptional MGB Roadster for the price.
 
While keeping the car garaged and confining outings to good weather, the current owner added some 7,000 miles since the renovation. Still, in all, the car has only traveled some 58,000 miles since new. This MGB's been garage-kept, but it's no garage queen. We're happy to have it here at GarageKeptMotors until its next fortunate owner falls under its spell. If the weather's good, it'll be all ready for an open-air road-trip to its new home.
