2000 Honda S2000 Roadster
 
“… the stuff sports-car fantasies are made of….” – Car and Driver
 
One mildly frustrating aspect of internet marketing is how difficult it is to know how many folks are looking at a particular car. While we may not know their number, one thing we can say for certain about the people gazing upon this Honda S2000: They are…drivers.
 
As the Car and Driver quote above suggests, since the car's launch in its namesake year, the S2000 has captured the hearts and fantasy of the sports-car-minded. The car's successful mix of outstanding power; tailored size body with supportive, supple seating for two; front-engine-rear-drive setup; handling and four-wheel-disc-braking prowess; close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission; all in a less-than-3,000-pound package is as satisfying as it is rare in the market. So rare, that back in the day, Honda dealers routinely added a “market adjustment” price factor above the window sticker. Apparently, fantasy has its cost.
 
Fortunately, the S2000 offered here is as affordable as it is captivating. Its Silverstone Metallic paint—in our opinion, the most appealing of the four colors in which the model was originally offered—displays a showroom shine. As evidenced in our dozens of photographs of the body alone, front-to-back and top-to-bottom, the painted surfaces are virtually free of wear or imperfection. The classic five-spoke alloy wheels are similarly pristine. In the cockpit, flawless red-leather seats and door inserts provide just the right lively visual touch against the remaining black interior trim and switchgear. The billet aluminum gearshift lever shows just enough patina to indicate enthusiast ownership. Underneath the car, the running gear and exhaust system display no signs of abuse or over-aggressive track use. Open the hood, and a splash of red continues on the valve cover of the VTEC engine, the very heart of the car.
 
S2000 aficionados—including the reviewers at Car and Driver—know well the music this 3.6-liter engine produces, noting: “Honda's small, rev-happy engine creates a wonderfully unique driving experience.” And it's rare music indeed, because the only other similarly sized sports-car engine capable of sustained 8,500-rpm levels comes in a six-figure Ferrari 360 Modena. These enthusiasts are also more than aware of the benefits of taking the car's 50-50 front-rear, rigid-frame weight distribution out on a twisty road. “The car communicates a clear picture of what's happening at the contact patch, and as in most Hondas, we could use every last ounce of the 0.90g of lateral grip with complete confidence. The S2000 takes a definite set in corners, but it never feels stuck in one position. It tracks arrow-straight when asked. The ride is firm but not harsh. The tail stays well-planted....” For the sports-car minded, that's as good a description of “perfect handling” as you're ever likely to get. 
 
We think this Honda S2000 is a near-perfect catch for someone… and that “someone” is a driver who's probably reading this right now, and maybe thinking about making their fantasy come true.
