1987 Porsche 924S

“As long as cars like the 924S remain available on the used marke…. enthusiasts still have access to affordable Porsche models….” –Hemmings Motor News

Manufactured for only the 1987 and 1988 model years, the “S” model Porsche 924 incorporated the same 2.5-liter Porsche-manufactured 4-cylinder engine that was standard on the Porsche 944. This larger engine replaced the VW 2.0-liter power plant in earlier cars, and delivered a nearly 50% power increase, with a factory-rated 147 horsepower and 134 mph top speed. Not changed was the transaxle design that gives every 924 a near 50-50 front-rear weight distribution and superb road manners.

Previously owned by a Porsche Club of America member, the Porsche 924S offered here is a well-maintained, rust-free driver showing 90,4xx miles, an average of under 1,000 miles per year recorded by the current owner. Its original Zermatt silver color, the only optional color upgrade offered bfrom the factory (professionally re-painted several years back). displays good gloss overall. According to the new-vehicle order form, the car was optioned from Porsche of Bernardsville, New Jersey with the relatively rare front and rear sway bars. Inside, cloth-and-leather seats in black feature the original Porsche-script upholstery inserts in remarkably well-maintained, condition, free of rips, tears, discoloring and seam-separation. A period-correct Blaupunkt SQ-49 cassette/AM/FM stereo is in place, and it has been reconditioned with Bluetooth capability added. A Coverlay®dashboard cap has also been professionally installed. The removable, electrically operated pop-up sunroof (and its storage bag) is in place and operational. The factory tool roll and original, space-saving spare tire and inflator are also included. Original 15-inch “phone dial” Porsche alloy wheels wear Pirelli P6 high-performance all-season tires with more than 85% tread remaining.

The car has just undergone a comprehensive, $3,500+ servicing with a new water-pump/timing belt kit, with thermostat, associated tensioners, rollers and the like replaced. (The timing-belt tension was set to factory specifications using the ArnnWorx 920v6.1 tool Porsche Panorama magazine recently found to be the only such tool able to reliably replicate factory-specified tension settings critical to long engine life.) Other maintenance performed at the same time included a new distributor, coil and rotor; new spark plugs and wires; a power-steering hose replacement; fuel-supply hose replacement; replacement of front wheel bearings; addition of stainless-steel brake lines; brake-fluid flush; and oil, fuel and air filters changed. Rear-glass struts were not replaced to avoid stress on the window frame; the rear hatch operates manually and can be easily propped open. In addition, the car's air-conditioning was fully serviced and blows cold.

This 924S is solid, rattle-free and drives virtually as-new shifting crisply through all five gears. The exhaust note above 4,000 rpm is a delight. Since Porsche galvanized all 924 bodies, the car is virtually free of rust, including the battery tray, trunk storage areas and spare tire well. It comes with partial maintenance records (complete for all the most recent work) and original manuals (including a copy of the new-vehicle order form, VIN/option-code sticker and some maintenance stamps). An inch-thick owner's binder containing model history information, maintenance receipts, registered-owner history (4 owners in all) and related documentation is also included.

Like the earlier Porsche 912 and 914 entry-level models, the 924 has begun to appreciate. While it can be difficult to locate a solid, well cared-for 924S these days, this Zermatt silver one proves it can be done.
