1965 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible

In the summer of 1964, the Cadillac factory shut down 22 days earlier than normal for the 1965 model-year changeover. This was the longest factory-close in Cadillac history, but was necessary to substantially modify the manufacturing lines to produce a completely re-designed Cadillac line. The engine was moved 6 inches forward on a new box-frame, a new rear suspension system together with front-suspension refinements for enhanced ride smoothness were added, and design innovations like curved side-glass all made for a substantial upgrade. Most noticeable to prospective buyers and the automotive press, Cadillac's large fins and other exaggerated styling cues gave way to a subtle, much more refined 1965 design.

There was a line once written that described luxury accommodations on a passenger train as “a place going somewhere.” That description nicely fits this captivating 1965 Cadillac Eldorado convertible. This “Cadillac place” is marked by luxury, size and style. Rare as it is today, even when it was brand new, only a select few were able to experience an Eldorado, except as spectators envying those fortunate enough to have acquired one. And in its convertible form, this Cadillac was—and still is—a very special automobile… a place going somewhere.

The rarity of a triple-burgundy (fabric top, leather upholstery and exterior paint) convertible Eldorado marks this car as unique. (The “E” in the VIN verifies the as-produced Eldorado designation.) A 340-horsepower, 429 cubic-inch V8 with 4-barrel carburetor, mated to a column-shifted Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, moved the car with a combination of serious, yet quiet, power. The expansive interior—best appreciated with the top down—really is a “place.” From the “Eldorado” badging on the trunk and front fenders, to the “Cadillac” logo embossed into the power door-locks and displayed on the factory air-conditioning unit, to the graceful, sweeping dash, front seats with armrest, understated front grille and smooth sheet-metal flanks, this automobile communicated Cadillac's definition of top-of-the-line automotive style. And it still does today.
