The Volkswagen Beetle was slow to catch on when first introduced to the US market in January of 1949, in fact only two sold that first year. Of course, the War had just ended a few short years prior, and perhaps Americans were a little hesitant to embrace a German-made automobile. However, it didn't take long and Americans quickly realized the venerable Beetle was an extremely reliable and affordable car making the “Bug” America's budget car by the early 1950s. Enthusiasts loved the easily adaptable Beetle, which could be custom-painted easily in unique designs, hopped for impressive performance or even converted to a dune buggy. VW saw this interest in their humble little bug and jumped on the opportunity to further their reasonable car's reach. In 1955 VW introduced the Type 14, which used the floor pans and mechanicals of the Beetle and a fresh new body design styled by Italy's Carrozzeria Ghia with hand-built bodywork by German coachbuilder Karmann. Named the VW Karmann Ghia, this stylish vehicle was offered in a coupe and convertible model and is one of VW's fastest offerings. Featured here is a stunning example of this vastly popular sports car, a 1974 VW Karmann Ghia Convertible.

This car is eye-catching with its brilliant red finish that has been well-applied over professional bodywork and the finish has been polished to a high gloss. Lightweight fiberglass bumpers have been installed and are painted body color and a custom set of LED front marker/directional signals have been fabricated into the front grille. The classic bullet-style rear view mirrors, polished alloy wheels, and roll bar certainly hint to the potential of this racy little convertible. The tan convertible top and matching tonneau cover with the red finish complement the Italian styling of this German sports car. The top fits well, is clean and presents very nicely showing very little wear.

Inside the matching tan interior features new grey carpeting and the seat upholstery presents as original, showing only some light wear with no rips or tears. A Glass-Action Unique Dash and console have been fabricated into the cockpit and fitted with aftermarket VDO gauges to monitor speed, fuel level, and engine vitals. A Grant vintage racing wheel with a foam cushioned rim and custom center cap, an EMPI shifter topped with an Iron Cross knob, and a custom fabricated cup holder in the console add the finishing touches to the racy interior. A Panasonic AM/FM Radio with CD player powers a set of rear-mounted 3-way 6X9 speakers to provide the soundtrack for the winding roads ahead.

A 1585 CC air-cooled four-cylinder with manual four-speed powers this Ghia and sounds amazing through the high-performance exhaust. Underneath this VW features many updates. The floorboards have been replaced and the underbody has been lightly detailed with chassis black paint and a light undercoating. The braking system has been upgraded with four-wheel disc brakes and features all-new brake lines. Front adjustable coil-over springs provide a lowered stance which combined with the HD stabilizer bar improves handling. Out back, the rear driveshafts and shocks have been replaced and a fresh set of BF Goodrich radial T/A tires keep this nimble little Ghia rolling smoothly.

There really is nothing like a convertible; the sun in your face, wind in your hair, and all your worries behind you! Affordably priced this Karmann Ghia offers a lot of fun for your dollar. Please call if interested or e-mail with specific questions. Thank you for looking.
