The Opel GT was first introduced as a concept car at the 1965 Frankfurt and later at the 1965 Paris Motor Shows and soon went into production from 1968 to 1973. Opel was a European satellite company for GM and sold in the US at Buick dealerships. Based on the Opel Kadett, the GT was designed by some of GM's best designers at the time, Clare MacKichan who designed the '55 Chevrolet Bel Air, and Chuck Jordan who later would become the vice president of design. The bodies for the GT were built by Brissonneau and Lotz of Paris and the GT design clearly drew from the C3 Corvette and is often referred to as the European Corvette. Garage Kept Motors is excited to feature for sale this fully restored 1971 Opel GT.

This Opel GT underwent a thorough restoration and has only been driven 4,000 miles after the restoration was completed. This car was completely disassembled, and the body was stripped to bare metal and any rust concerns were addressed. The body was sprayed with PPG 2010 Dodge Viper Blue over well-executed bodywork and the finish was prepped and polished to a deep luster with new weatherstrip installed during reassembly. The front and rear bumpers are new stainless-steel pieces, and the emblems and chrome trim were either replaced with new items or restored. The steel wheels were powdercoated in the correct factory hue and fully restored with the trim rings and center caps being re-chromed and the assembly wrapped in new Falken radial tires.

Inside the cockpit, the interior has been restored with new seat upholstery, headliner, and carpet. The dash and faux wood-rimmed steering wheel were sent out for restoration and look factory-fresh. The rally gauge arrangement further demonstrates the influence of the 3-Gen Corvettes on this sports car with the large speedometer and tachometer whose placement mirrors that of the C3 Corvette. The radio has been upgraded to an Alpine unit with AM/FM and CD player that plays through a set of four Kenwood Speakers.

Inside the engine compartment is fully restored and well-detailed. The engine was thoroughly overhauled, and the cylinders were over-bored to accommodate larger pistons increasing the cubic displacement from 1.9L to 2.0L. The cylinder head has been upgraded with larger valves that breathe freely into a stainless-steel header and custom stainless-steel exhaust with a Magnaflow muffler. The power is transferred to a four-speed transmission that was rebuilt with new gaskets, synchros, and bearings.

Underneath this Opel GT is fully restored with the floors painted body color and is fully detailed, looking darn near showroom fresh. Suspension pieces have been powdercoated and all new polyurethane bushings were installed. The brakes were completely restored with a new master cylinder, wheel cylinders, calipers, front pads, drums, shoes, and related hardware including emergency brake cables. The brake lines and fuel lines are new as well. Springs were replaced and new KYB gas shocks were installed on all four corners. The attention to detail of this restoration is truly impressive.
