1970 Plymouth GTX
2-Door Hardtop Coupe

- Same Owner Since 1989
- Southern Car
- 440ci V8
- Yellow over Black
- Holley Carb and Rebuilt Engine

Introduced as the Belvedere GTX by Plymouth in 1967, the GTX was a mid-sized upscale-trimmed performance muscle car offered through the 1971 model year. Differentiated from the Belvedere by a blacked-out grille and special rear fascia, fiberglass simulated hood scoop(s) with optional racing stripes, a chrome “pop-open” fuel filler cap, and tachometer mounted on the center console, the GTX was often referred to as the “gentleman's muscle car.”

Noted as the pinnacle of the muscle car wars, the 1970 model year of the GTX was not the outstanding performance that Plymouth might have wanted. Sales were low as this model year did not look much different from the Road Runner also offered under the Plymouth name. It is noted that only 7,748 hardtops were sold. The 1970 model year did receive a minor redesign with a new grille and rear taillights that were unlike the previous model run. Stylists made the lines smoother, and a “power bulge” hood was introduced, as well as non-functional rear-brake air scoops. The convertible body style was no longer available but as part of the marketing strategy, the 1970 model included many standard features.

Highlighted here is a Plymouth GTX Hardtop Coupe. Mentioned as being a Southern vehicle and having the same owner since 1989, this vehicle is a good example of what a true muscle car is. Powered by a 440ci V8 with a Holley carburetor and a rebuilt engine, this Plymouth is ready to hit the road. Sporting a yellow over black color combination, this GTX's exterior is subtle without being boring. The black stripes on both the hood and along the sides provide evidence of the true performance that the normal body styling may not from looks alone. With minor signs of wear on both the exterior and interior, it can be assumed that this vehicle has enjoyed much of its life.

Within the cabin you will find front buckets and a rear bench which along with the headliner do not show much wear. The wood accented door panels and dash, on the other hand, do have scarring and scratches. The radio has been completely removed from the dash, but the original unit is included in the sale. The wooden steering wheel has been smoothed to the perfect texture for any cruiser's liking and offsets the black interior nicely.

Although this specific GTX may not be a concours example that collectors dream of, it is a solid vehicle that a collector can enjoy. With a heritage line including the Plymouth Road Runner, the GTX is a strong asset to the pinnacle muscle car scene that occurred around the 1970s. Displaying lots of life and plenty of road left to travel, we hope that you consider this GTX for the next addition to your collection. Please call if interested or e-mail with specific questions.
