The 1970 Ford Thunderbird and its facelift debut in 1970 is a very interesting automotive history story. The early two seat Thunderbirds of the 50's were intended to compete with the Chevrolet Corvette. However, with the introduction of the Mustang in the early 60's, Ford's ponycar took on the fight with GM's Corvette and later the Camaro and the Thunderbird was then marketed as a personal luxury car for the executive class in need of a luxurious vehicle that was above the more youthful and economy-based Mustangs. By 1970 the Lincoln Continental Mark III shared the four-door Thunderbird chassis, and well into the 70's these were related cars sharing a great deal of engineering DNA. In 1970 the Thunderbird not only was the height of luxury but could also had the performance to match, accelerating to 60 mph in less than 8 seconds. Two legends from GM came together at Ford to create the eagle like beak of the Thunderbird in 1970.

Semon “Bunkie” Knudsen had a long and successful history as a General Motors executive. Joining the company before the United States had entered the Second World War, he worked his way up the ranks of Pontiac before departing in 1968. Upon leaving GM, “Bunkie" became the President of Ford for a very brief stint. At this time, the manager introduced a design quirk to the Ford Thunderbird called the Bunkie Beak by enthusiasts. Others refer to this as simply a “long nose”, like the one found on the 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix. Legendary designer Larry Shinoda, of Corvette fame and thus a fan of pointed noses in his work, penned the beak. This addition to the car came in 1970 and essentially acted as a part of the fifth thunderbird's facelift and attempted to give the Thunderbird the beak of an Eagle, incredibly patriotic.

Garage Kept Motors is very proud to feature for sale an original example of this historic luxury performance car with only 60,000 miles on it. This T-bird features a Green exterior with black vinyl roof. The paint is all original and presents well for a 50-year-old finish with some blemishes and light swirl scratches throughout but still has a nice shine. The original Cayman Grain black vinyl top is still in place and looks amazing for being 5 decades old. The chrome and stainless trim is unrestored and presents with some light patina but has been well maintained still gives off a rich luster. Unique features of this model are the stunning sequential taillights and hidden windshield wipers which park below the line if sight.

Inside the cabin the interior is very well preserved and abounds in 70's luxury. The rich dark green upholstery shows little wear, and the factory floor mats are still present making this interior much like a time capsule to the era. Features include power seats, power windows, AM/FM/8 track stereo with hidden antenna, full factory instrumentation and rear defrost. SelectAire Conditioner with climate control keeps the interior climate consistent, you simply set it the system does the rest!

The underbody is unrestored but well preserved with no indications of rust or accident repair. The fuel tank, and fuel Lines have been replaced. The power brakes, front disc and rear drums, have been fully serviced including new brake lines. The SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission transfers the power from the engine compartment in a smooth fluid like manner. A set of chrome American Racing Torque Thrust wheels have been added and roll-on radial tires.

Under the hood sits the 429cid/360hp V8. The engine compartment is well preserved with factory assembly markings and under hood decals still present. The points style ignition has been updated to a Petronix electronic ignition and has been well maintained. A recent LOF and tune-up as well fresh coolant hose have this T-bird ready to cruise. Other standard features include the “fluidic-control” power steering and power front disc brakes.
