There is a saying among automotive enthusiasts that goes: “If you want to build an affordable hot rod, buy one already done!” The 1980 Chevrolet Malibu 2 door coupe featured here is a great example of this mantra. As you look at this Malibu and all of the high performance modifications incorporated into the build you will quickly come to the same conclusion we did, you really couldn't build this mean street machine for the price it is being offered for.

This project started out as a rust-free Southern car, that was treated to a frame off restoration. Hugger Orange paint was carefully applied over well executed body work and the finish was polished to a deep luster. A steel cowl hood was incorporated into the build and the chrome bumpers and related stainless trim is reported as new and presents with a brilliant shine. The body is mounted to the chassis with Energy Suspension polyurethane body, engine and transmission mounts and polyurethane bushings are used throughout suspension. The suspension features power steering and has been completely rebuilt with components from Performance Suspension Technology, and it features front and rear heavy-duty stabilizers and boxed rear trailering arms. A fully built TCI 350 THM GM transmission with a high stall torque convertor transfers the power to a Currie prepared Ford 9” rear end. The rear differential is filled with a set of 3.7:1 gears and a Detroit Locker carrier to put the power to the road. The brakes have been upgraded to a Wildwood four-wheel power disc brake system with all new brake lines. The exhaust has been mandrel bent to insure superior flow and expulsion of the exhaust into Flowmaster mufflers. When you need a little more power a set of electric exhaust cut offs were incorporated into intermediate pipes that open the exhaust with a flick of a switch.

The interior cabin has been fully upgraded as well. The door cards have been subtly modified with lower carpet inserts and upper textured upholstery and matching rear cards. The stock dash has been replaced with a custom carbon fiber unit that houses AutoMeter Pro Comp Ultra-lite gauges and integrated switches for the fuel pump and nitrous operation. A leather wrapped LaCarra wheel sits atop a factory tilt steering column. The front seats have been replaced with high back upholstered racing seats with 5-point racing seat belts and the rear seats have been re-upholstered to match the front seats upholstery pattern. A 6-point roll cage with bolt in removable door bars has been welded to the frame for added structure and safety and a B&M Megashifter controls the shifts.

Under the hood sits a fully built 490ci/600hp V8. This big block is topped with a set of AFR Aluminum heads and Eagle full rotating assembly. A complete Comp Camshaft kit was installed with 550/550 lift and 292 Duration and Comp 1.7 ratio roller tip rockers open the valves. This combination is topped by an Edelbrock aluminum intake with a Quick Fuel Prepped Holley carburetor. The fuel/air mixture is lit by a GM HEI ignition and the burnt gases are expelled through a set of Hooker large tube headers. In case 600 horsepower is not quite enough, you can turn it up to 11 with a quick shot of 250 more HP from a NOS Nitrous oxide base plate injection set up. The engine compartment is clean and well detailed with chrome accessories that add plenty of bling to make this a real showstopper. This hot set up is kept cool with an aluminum radiator and dual electric fans with an aluminum fan shroud.

Looking through the file of receipts you can see how no detail has been overlooked, and the result of this build is one mean street machine, that could easily do some time at the strip. This car is well built and will present well at any show, and with only 178 miles on this car since it was completely rebuilt it is literally turn-key and ready to show, cruise or race.
