Unveiled by Tesla in March of 2019 and production in January 2020, the Model Y is a battery electric compact crossover. Based on the Model 3 platform the Model Y shares an estimated 75% of its parts with the Model 3, which includes a similar interior and exterior design and electric powertrain. Offering an optional third-row seating configuration for up to seven passengers, the Model Y fills a smaller and less expensive segment for Tesla that is not applicable for the mid-sized Model X. Although Tesla planned on producing the Model Y with four powertrain configurations, only two of them made it to actual vehicle manufacture. These are the Long Range with dual motor all-wheel drive (AWD) and Performance (with dual motor all-wheel drive) models.

Tesla notes that the Model Y is a completely electric automobile and there is no need to ever stop at a gas station again. With a noted range of 330 miles per charge and claiming a 162-mile recharge in only 15 minutes, the Model Y could be considered an economical vehicle of the future. With other modern technologies that include a 15-inch touchscreen display, expansive Glass Roof, and immersive sound system.
