“You get what you pay for.” – Car and Driver 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera review

“Once again, Porsche has squeezed more power and torque from the 3.6‑liter aluminum-alloy six—from 270 hp to 282 and from 243 pound-feet to 250. Our six-speed 911… ran 0 to 60 in 4.9 seconds—identical to the all-wheel-drive 911 we tested in December 1994—and turned the quarter-mile in 13.5, a tenth of a second quicker than the previous car. Top speed was 161 mph (though its braggadocio speedo falsely registered 175 mph). Porsche says the added power can be sensed in midrange. Correct. Wind it out in second gear and you'll see 68 mph at redline, and a few blinks later, 100 in third. (By the way, just starting this engine sent a tough, dozing neighborhood cat we know loping off at a distressed trot, belly close to the ground, ears pressed back. It has that effect on guys in rap-vibrating late-model Camaros, too.)”

Offered here in rare (L39S) Aventurine Green over (code PJ) Marble grey/black leather interior with black dash, door trims, grey carpet) under a marble (light grey) fabric soft top with matching boot is a 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera cabriolet. Originally delivered to Porsche dealer, Delta Imports of Grand Rapids, Michigan, the car was specially ordered (this would later come to be known as “Porsche Exclusive") with the Marble leather upholstery. Recently (in August 2002) the car underwent a comprehensive $10,000 service (documented in the gallery).

The exterior Aventurine Green metallic finish is pleasing to the eye, especially in direct sunlight. Lightly tinted cabin glass and all lighting lenses are clear and free of cracks. Badging, including the full-color Porsche hood crest and rear “Carrera” model designation, are without flaws. The classic original 17-inch “cup” wheels with silver-and-black Porsche crest center caps, are mounted with Michelin® Pilot Sport 255/40 performance tires. The wheel openings allow unobstructed views of the Porsche-branded brake calipers and drilled brake rotors.

The unique Marble Grey-themed leather upholstery makes a stunning design statement and a perfect complement to the exterior. The black dash and trim, as well as light-grey cabin carpeting appear original to the car. The stock, 3-spoke, Porsche-crest, black steering wheel frames the full array of clear-lens VDO® analog gauges. The original CDR 210 audio unit is mounted in the factory-radio location. Graphic markings on switchgear and instruments remain crisp; the dashboard is free of fading or cracking. The shift lever for the 6-speed manual transmission is mounted on the grey console forward of the handbrake and power-window controls. (Please view the close-up photography in the gallery to assess the outstanding condition of the Porsche's various interior surfaces.) Grey carpeting in the front trunk is unworn and clean.

Under the rear engine cover, the 3.6-liter, flat-6 engine occupies a clean and fully original-appearing engine bay. There are no indications of any performance modifications having been added. Viewed from below, the chassis and lower surfaces show no damage; the clean lower-engine surface and extensive original protective panels are especially noteworthy. (To best evaluate the condition of undercarriage surfaces, please review the gallery photos shot from below.)

The car's factory-mounted identification and information tags remain in place. The owner's manual, warranty booklet, two key fobs and other literature are included in the sale.

While the more than 200 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '96 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

The satisfactions that arise from 993-series Porsche 911 Carrera ownership are many and varied. Whether it's the legendary performance on the road, the "last of the air-cooled 911s" distinction, the car's beautiful design even when standing still, the sense that a well-equipped example is virtually a one-of-a-kind car, the heritage of the Stuttgart manufacturer, or the joy of knowing the owner is a steward for a car that may well live on for decades to come, owning such a car delivers above and beyond what virtually any other brand offers.
