“The thing about an M3 is that it's the archetypal driver's car.” – SuperStreet BMW ME36 M3 Buyer's Guide, September 2020

“ Turbos are becoming more commonplace. So, a naturally aspirated straight-six making 240 hp might be thought of as old hat. But not if it's under the hood of an E36 M3. This car is a supporting wall in the house that BMW built. A house that stands for rear-drive dynamics, autobahn-blasting, and unarguable automotive class. And anyway, unless you're a track-day fiend, isn't it more fun to get close to the limits of a car like this than have something way more powerful and never get the chance to really stretch its metaphorical legs?”

What about reliability? “It arrived with a 3.0L engine, going up to 3.2 in 1996. Horsepower stayed the same but torque bumped up from 225 lb-ft to 236. Both versions are reliable. They should see 200,000 miles on the odometer with regular maintenance and using good-quality oils.”

The car's exterior Titan Silver metallic paint finish is excellent, retaining close-to-showroom appearance and gloss, free of flaws or damage. All panels on the sculpted body—including the M-specific lower-front valance and lower-body ground-effects trim—show BMW-characteristic accurate fit and finish. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Matte-black trim—including the front chin spoiler, bespoke kidney-shaped grilles (and lower intake), body-side moldings, door handles, and rear lower-valance insert—retain fresh-appearing finishes. The black fabric soft top (for the power-operated convertible roof) is free of wear or damage. Minimal chrome trim is in excellent condition as well. Factory-tinted cabin glass and all lighting lenses are clear and unmarred. All factory badging is properly in place, notably the desirable “M3” emblems on the sides and rear deck. Original 5-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels (with BMW-logo center caps and “M” badging) are mounted with Riken® Raptor 225/45 Z-rated performance tires. The right-front wheel shows some light patina.

Inside, the gray-and charcoal-color theme works perfectly with the exterior paint. Sculpted door panels incorporate the two colors. Well-bolstered front bucket and 2-person rear bench seats are upholstered in properly-maintained, damage-free gray leather, with each seatback accented by the tri-color, M-specific stripes. Charcoal carpeting protected by M-branded carpet mats covers the cabin floors. The driver-focused black dash includes the full complement of instruments behind the BMW and “M” branded steering wheel. A Pioneer® audio head unit replaces the factory radio to the right on the dash, below the climate controls. Shift lever for the 5-speed automatic transmission is located on the console. All interior surfaces—including switchgear and instrument graphic markings—retain their near-original finish and feel.

Under the hood, the 3.2-liter, inline-6-cylinder BMW engine, well known for its power, smoothness in operation, and long life, commands an engine bay that appears much as it must have on the day the car left the Regensburg factory in Bavaria. Surfaces are pristine, and all components are properly mounted with no sign of modifications. Viewed from below, the chassis is complete and undamaged. The side-by-side dual exhaust and rack-and-pinion steering components are visual focal points. Light surface rust is present on some untreated metal.

The car's original build and identification tags remain as mounted at the factory. Service records are included in the sale.

While the more than 165 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '99 BMW M3 Convertible in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Few sporty cars can match the BMW M3's legendary performance, road manners, and style. Add to that the joys of top-down, open-air drives, and many would label it sporting-car perfection. We're confident this beautiful silver E36's next owner will agree wholeheartedly.
