From Car and Driver's October 1, 2001 Porsche 911 Carrera review: “Those guys at the Weissach engineering shop don't simply sweat the details, they flood 'em. For this midyear model change, they also pounced on the 996 version of the 911 and gave it a thorough makeover.”

More excerpts:

“Let's start with the engine. It's still a flat-six, but now, thanks to numerous additions, it pumps out 315 horsepower at 6800 rpm - 15 more horses than the 2001 car. Eighty percent of the engine internals were changed to find the new power, and the flat-six retains LEV status and current fuel economy.”

“Also new is a fuel-supply system with no return line, which keeps the fuel cooler. There's also a new exhaust system with reduced back pressure and a throatier low-rpm burble that anyone with a trace of 93 octane in his or her veins will find luscious.”

“There's enough low-end grunt that we rarely felt the need to downshift the beefed-up six-speed manual transmission. For shiftless folks, Porsche borrowed the stronger five-speed automatic transmission from the 911 Turbo to handle the extra power.”

“We won't be surprised if the more powerful 911 Carrera coupe sprints to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds — 0.2 second quicker than the current one. Porsche figures the new car will reach 177 mph, a figure we have not verified, but it sounds reasonable.”

Clearly, the 2001 911 was a major reinvention of the 996-series car.

Offered here in rare triple-blue—Lapis Blue paint, blue fabric convertible top, and Metropol Blue full-leather interior—is a standout 2001 all-wheel-drive Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet. The car's factory standard and optional equipment is fully documented on the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity included in the sale and also shown in the gallery, Originally delivered in Illinois, the current odometer reading is 69,804 miles, or fewer than 3,400 miles per-year on average since new. As important, the Carfax history report documents a comprehensive list of dealer-performed services at Porsche Grand Rapids with after-warranty service continuing at Grand Rapids' German Auto Service, probably the most-respected independent Porsche-service resource in the area.

The Lapis Blue exterior paint finish is excellent, and the color shows why “Porsche blues” are held in such high esteem by aficionados. The Porsche-color experts at rennbow.org agree, noting: “Porsche Lapis Blue is a jewel-like shade named for a semi-precious stone prized for its intense blue color. Porsche Lapis Blue is perhaps the most striking Porsche 996 blue.” The dark-blue fabric convertible top—in similarly excellent condition--provides the perfect complementary accent. All body panels are free of dings, dents, or other damage. Even door handles, often the victims of minor scratches, are extremely well-kept. Lightly tinted cabin glass and all lighting lenses are clear and free of cracks. Badging, including on the iconic Porsche hood crest and rear model designations is complete, crisp and unfaded. The 18-inch optional 10-spoke, sport-design wheels are mounted with Continental® Extreme Contact tires. The wheel openings allow unobstructed views of the brake calipers and cross-drilled brake rotors. To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.)

Inside, the Metropol blue leather makes a stunning design statement and a perfect complement to the exterior completing the rare and highly desirable triple-blue color statement. All surfaces appear original to the car. The car's black headliner shows no wear. The stock, 3-spoke, Porsche-crest, black steering wheel frames the full array of white-faced analog gauges. The original, Porsche-branded CDR-220 audio head unit remains mounted. Graphic markings on switchgear and instruments remain crisp; the dashboard is free of fading or cracking. The shift lever for the 6-speed manual transmission is mounted on the console forward of the handbrake and armrest-with-storage. A full set of Porsche-logo-embroidered carpet mats is included. (Please view the close-up photography in the gallery to assess the outstanding condition of the Porsche's various interior surfaces.)

Under the rear engine cover, the 3.4-liter, flat-6 engine occupies a clean and fully original-appearing engine bay. There are no indications of any performance modifications having been added. Viewed from below, the chassis and lower surfaces show no damage; the clean lower-engine surface and unscarred original protective panels are especially noteworthy. (To best evaluate the condition of undercarriage surfaces, please review the gallery photos shot from below.)

The car's factory-mounted identification and information tags remain in place. The owner's manual, and other literature are included in the sale, as is a Porsche-branded car cover.

The satisfactions that arise from Porsche 911 ownership are many and varied. Whether it's the legendary performance on the road, the car's beautiful design even when standing still, the sense that a well-equipped example is virtually a one-of-a-kind car, the heritage of the Stuttgart manufacturer, or the joy of knowing the owner is a steward for a car that may well live on for decades to come, owning such a car delivers above and beyond what virtually any other brand offers. In the case of this 911 Cabriolet, the joys of open-air driving, a 6-speed manual, all-wheel-drive sure-footedness, a rare color combination, excellent service history, factory documentation and low mileage, and the car checks many boxes for the enthusiast.
