“A sports car without compromises.” Car and Driver, July 200

Excerpts from the Car & Driver review:

“The S4 sedan is one of our sweethearts. It won a comparison test in May 2003 Compact ("Adrenaline-Delivery Systems") and snagged a spot on this year's 10Best Cars list. Its combination of burly V-8 power, tautly beautiful sheetmetal, and four-wheel-drive sure-footedness is unbeatable in this segment of the car market. We all expected the droptop version to be just as sweet and, well, basically, it is.”

“The sprint to 60 mph took 5.8 seconds-0.8 second slower than the sedan. The quarter-mile time worsened from 13.6 seconds at 103 mph to 14.3 seconds at 98 mph. There was one major advance: The S4 sedan has a governed top speed of 130 mph, and although Audi says the S4 cabriolet has a 155-mph top-speed limiter, our test car ran to 162 before the limiter hollered.

“The S4's straight-line speed feels plenty quick, though, and is about equal to that of a pair of sharp roadsters, the Porsche Boxster and the Nissan 350Z. But those sports don't offer four-wheel drive, a feature that's standard on the S4….”

“Perhaps the best part is the little switch on the center console that calls the top to action. In 23 seconds, a series of motors and hydraulic actuators first drop the windows a half-inch, unlock the top from the windshield frame, raise the hard boot, fold the top into the well, and then finally lower the boot. The three-layer cloth top does a commendable job of keeping the interior quiet, and when it's lowered, wind buffeting isn't really an issue….”

That's a lot to like.

Offered here is a 2004 Audi S4 Quattro Cabriolet in triple black: black exterior paint, black interior color theme, under a black convertible top. The S4's odometer reads 67,358 miles. That's fewer than 3,750 miles per-year on average since new. The S4 is powered by Audi's time-tested 4.2-liter V8 with power delivered via the quattro system to all four wheels. The 6-speed manual transmission shifter is floor-mounted giving the roadster a pure sports-car feel.

The exterior black paint is in exceptionally well-maintained condition. Excellent gloss, color, and overall finish; all characteristic of Audi's excellent paint-application technology. Body panels—including the lower front valance and the tailgate—are free of dings, dents, scuffs, or other damage. Chrome and brushed-metal body trim—on the window surrounds and grille—has been properly cared-for and retains original condition. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Cabin glass (including on the power sunroof) and all lighting lenses are pristine, free of cracks, fading or other damage. Factory 5-spoke Avus 17-inch alloy wheels with Audi-logo center caps are mounted with all-season tires. factory badging—including 4-rings logo emblems front and rear, and model and engine designations on the tailgate—remains properly in place.

Inside, Audi's well-deserved reputation for quality materials and industry-leading fit and finish is on display everywhere. Belack leather seat upholstery is clean and free of any damage. Matching door trim is similarly well-preserved. Genuine burled-wood trim, on the console, dash, and door trim is especially pleasing and free of damage. A multi-function steering wheel frames the instrument cluster. All graphic markings on the instruments and control surfaces are sharp; gauge lenses are clear. The factory audio unit remains in place. Black carpeting covers the cabin floors and continues into the cargo area.

Under the hood, the 4.2-liter V8 is centermost in a very clean and orderly engine bay. All components are properly in place and no modifications are noted. Viewed from below, the car's chassis is straight and free of damage. The car's below-engine protective panel remains mounted.

The Audi's original factory-mounted build and identification tags remain in place.

While the more than 40 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '04 S4 in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom.
