For 1968, GM introduced the redesigned A-Body platform which featured a shorter 112” wheelbase and a dramatic new look for the cars of that line; 442, GS, GTO and of course the Chevelle. While arguably one can cite that the earlier generation of the A-Body line kicked off the muscle car era (in the form of the GTO), when you mention this era of intermediate cars with oversized engines most folks picture the Chevelle SS.

Featured here is a perfect example why these new for 1968 A-Body cars in many ways define the era when muscle ruled the streets. The stance on this Super Sport Chevelle is perfect, sitting on stock SS steel wheels with raised white letter radial tires. The Dark Cherry paint is an older repaint with a few blemishes but presents extremely well with a deep luster and has been well maintained. Chrome bumpers appear original with some light patina but still shine vibrantly. Chevrolet had it right with these Chevelles, it features subtle badges that call out the big block mayhem under the hood, but you have to look close! Unfortunately, the largest call outs to the SS 396 option is on the tail panel, which is the last reminder you see as this Chevelle blows your doors off!

The floorboards of this vehicle are solid and rust free with a light undercoating to protect the factory metal. There are no power robbing power accessories on this suspension, steering and brakes are manual with no power assist with drum brakes on all four corners. Chevrolet equipped these cars right with the drivetrain behind the torguey 396 big block, with the heavy duty 3 speed 400 Turbo-Hydramatic transmission which transfers the power to the legendary GM 12 bolt rear differential. Of course, no 60's muscle car would be complete without a set of era correct traction bars to help plant all that power to the pavement.

Inside the black interior is mostly original, cosmetically restored with new carpet and the front bucket seats which have been recovered. Upgrades include Autometer oil pressure and temperature gauges and a large tachometer to monitor the engine vitals. Dig out your favorite mix tape as the tunes are broadcasted through a vintage Sony AM/FM/Cassette player. Gear changes are handled by a floor mounted B&M Shifter.

Completing this street dominator package is the “built” 396cid Big Block V8 assembled my Pro Racing Engines of Crown Point, Indiana. Erson open air element air cleaner and chrome valve covers add the high-performance bling to this package. A Holley Double pumper carburetor sits a top an Edelbrock aluminum intake and the combustion is fired by a GM HEI ignition with Accel Super Coil. The horses rumble through stainless exhaust headers in to 3” exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers that dump just in front of the rear differential.

This Chevelle is well sorted and ready to cruise to your local Cars and Caffeine, cruise in or car show where it will turn heads with its throaty idle and menacing looks.
