There is a running joke around Garage Kept Motors that was inspired by a sketch on Saturday Night Live staring the comedian, Chris Farley. We all quote it when we hear the name El Camino: “Do you know what El Camino means in Spanish?” Farley would say, and then later answers his question, “THE Camino!” And then we all laugh like we are in junior high again.

The reality is the GM derived the name from the El Camino Real, which translated is “The Royal Road”. The El Camino Real was a historic road that connected 21 Spanish Missions 200 years ago in what is now California and now marked by historic Highway 101. Travelers following the road at the time of Spanish Missionaries could leave one mission in the morning and arrive safely at the next one by nightfall. In many ways this 1972 Chevrolet El Camino “SS” Tribute featured here holds true to its namesake as a safe and reliable transport into the fun to drive and collector car world.

This El Camino pictured here is a very affordable entry level way to start or re-enter into the muscle car hobby. Overall, this is a solid car, with good structure that will be fun to drive as is but also will be a great vehicle to tinker on and further restore and upgrade, making it a great candidate for a rolling restoration/project.

The finish on this Chevrolet is an older cosmetic restoration that is starting to show some age. There are chips, some paint flaking and bubbling throughout the finish. Still the paint shines with a nice luster and presents well. As you look underneath the car you will see there is no serious rust through concerns with the sheet metal on this vehicle making it a great candidate for a repaint later down the road. The cowl induction hood, the Corvette rally rims wrapped in raised white letter radials and Super Sport trim and stripes bode well to the eye-catching presentation of this El Camino as is.

The undercarriage is unrestored featuring power brakes with drum brakes on all four corners and power steering. The suspension and steering look to have been maintained and features a newer dual exhaust with chambered style performance mufflers that gives the 350 small block V8 a nice rumble through the tailpipes.

Under the hood sits a stock 350cid V8 which features a set of headers, chrome valve covers and open element air cleaner. The engine appears to have been well maintained with a fresh tune-up and new fuel pump. As demonstrated in the video the motor starts right up and runs well.

The interior has been upgraded with original SS door panels and related Super Sport trim including the steering wheel. The carpet is lightly worn and has some color fade and the upholstery is free of any rips or tears. Engine vitals are monitored by a set of aftermarket under dash gauges and the radio has been upgraded to a Panasonic AM/FM/CD stereo player with rear mounted speakers to provide a little background tunes as you cruise into your local cars and coffee, car show or just out for a drive.
