Of all the American cars ever built or produced few have achieved the infamy of the Chevrolet Tri-Fives. These iconic cars were manufactured from 1955 to 1957 and are recognizable by even the least interested enthusiasts across the planet. The role of these groundbreaking cars was not just in automotive history, but American History which has driven their popularity, and value to continue rise as other mid-century cars have leveled off.
Tri-Fives are mainly divided into four models — the 150, 210, the Nomad and the Bel Air convertibles and hardtops which is the model featured here. The 1955 model was also referred to as the “shoebox” because of its squared-off body, which was radically different than any previous Chevrolet prior and featured the newly released small block V8 engines. These cars are truly representative of 1950's American Suburbia, with the many trim levels and over 70 options there was truly a Chevrolet for everyone.
This 1955 Chevrolet Hardtop is very well optioned and an excellent example of what made these cars popular to new car buyers in 1955 and for generations of drivers following. As this car approaches 70 years old we could all hope to look this good at this age. Painted in period correct white and turquoise two-tone paint, all the chrome and stainless trim that personifies 50's era cars is present and shines with a deep luster. Paint presents well with a nice shine and just few slight imperfections in the paint. This car also features the optional and rare bumper grille and fender guards up front and out back as well as the authentic factory spare tire Continental kit which further captures the styling popular in the mid-50's. Further this car also features factory outside rearview mirrors and fender antenna.
The interior cabin is truly a 1950's time capsule with two tone turquoise and white upholstery even protected in period correct clear vinyl seat covers. Other iconic options in the interior include factory original floor mats, tissue dispenser, heater and defroster, AM push button radio with rear speaker and rear speaker fader, in dash electric clock, courtesy lights, cigarette lighter, safety light with mirror, inside sun visor, traffic light viewer, and electric windshield wipers.
The underbody is clean rust-free, characteristic of a car that spent its early years in California and is undercoated. While unrestored, the front and rear suspension appear to be well maintained. Front suspension features factory power steering, and the front brakes have been upgraded to power disc brakes and Corvette-style dual reservoir master cylinder. The suspension hits the road with period correct looking white wall radial tires mounted on American Racing vintage-style Torque Thrust magnesium wheels.
Under the hood is a newer Chevrolet 350ci V8 topped with a Holley Sniper EFI mounted on a Chevrolet Performance dual plane aluminum intake and the spark is ignited with an electronic ignition. Power is transferred to a modern Turbo-Hydramatic 3-speed automatic transmission. The exhaust note travels through dual exhaust pipes into Flowmaster chambered exhaust giving this 50's cruiser a throaty rumble. The mild resto-mod upgrades to the powertrain gives this car easy start up cold or warm, perfect fuel mixture that provides instant throttle response, improved power and fuel mileage. You can reliably drive this vintage hot rod anywhere, reliably, perhaps even explore the USA in it!
The reality is 67 years later, you drive this car into your suburban neighborhood and it will still be the envy of all the neighbors. The only thing that is changed, your neighbors can not go down to the local Chevy Dealer and buy one just like it. You will have the only one like this!
