“A dramatic fastback profile characterized the… SportsRoof Mustangs.” – Hemmings Muscle Car Profile

Hemmings went on: “The… Mach 1 treated its buyer to a host of popular-for-the-era upgrades, such as an impact-resistant molded micellar urethane foam body-colored coating for the front bumper, sport-driving-lamps-equipped honeycomb-pattern grille... honeycomb-pattern rear panel appliqué, pop-open gas cap, 'Mach 1' fender decals, black or argent lower-body and front and rear valance panels, rear tape stripe with a 'Mach 1' decal, and color-keyed racing mirrors with driver's-side remote-control.”

The Mustang Mach 1 SportsRoof model offered here wears a standout color combination: jet-black paint with silver hood stripe over a black vinyl interior. Exterior features include front urethane bumpers, induction hood with twin air intakes, large front air-dam spoiler, rear-deck-mounted spoiler in black, Mach 1 badging on the front fenders, silver rear-deck stipe, and silver side stripes. The Mustang emblem in the grille, Mustang-script badges on the front fenders, and “Mach 1” graphic identification on the sides and rear are in undamaged condition. American Racing 5-spoke, bright-finished alloy wheels with chrome center-caps are mounted with Cooper Cobra Radial GT raised-white-letter tires.

The car's interior features classic, black vinyl upholstery with perforated, horizontal-pattern inserts on both the front, high-back buckets and the foldable rear, 2-position bench seat. Door panels are black molded hard plastic with woodgrain trim and black-carpeted kick panels; roll-up window cranks and speakers are mounted. Cabin floors are carpeted in black rubber protective mats up front and carpet mats in back. A replacement, 4-spoke sport steering wheel with varnished-maple trim and chrome trim frames the large speedometer and tachometer with a smaller fuel gauge in between. Three analog engine-monitoring gauges are located on the center stack. The upper-center console includes the upgraded Pioneer head unit in place of the factory radio, slide-lever controls for the heating and ventilation, with a t-shifter for the automatic transmission on the console and an armrest with storage to the rear.

Under the hood, the 351-cubic-inch V8 engine (in proper Ford blue) has added flair from an open-sided chrome air cleaner cover (with engine decal), bare-metal intake, and chrome valve covers. (Be sure to sample the car's engine note by watching the video linked with this listing.) The engine bay is very clean and nicely detailed with no noticeable performance modifications. All components are properly located. Viewed from below, the chassis is complete, straight, and undamaged. The full-length, performance, dual-exhaust system with cross-over pipe is a focal point of the underside of this pony car.

While the more than 180 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '73 Ford Mustang Mach 1 in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.
