“This postwar American take on an import sports car still shines.” - Hemmings Motor News, June 2020

From the GM Heritage Center: “The 1953 Buick Skylark convertible was the centerpiece of Buick's 50th Anniversary. The Skylark came with standard equipment beyond anything previously offered by Buick. Based on the premium-series Buick Roadmaster chassis, the Skylark had a look all of its own. The Kelsey-Hayes 40-spoke chrome wheels are acknowledged by collectors as among the most beautiful wheels to ever grace a production car. Powered by Buick's first modern V8 engine, this car's performance matched its racy appearance. Sales in 1953 totaled just 1,640 units, making the Skylark a rare and collectible car.”

Offered here is a 1953 Buick Skylark Convertible in yellow over black-and-white under a black fabric, power-operated convertible top. This very well-maintained, largely original-condition survivor showing just 20,807 miles, is a legitimate low-mileage classic.

The exterior non-metallic yellow paint shows very well across the curvaceous body; gloss is excellent and the body is free of dings, dents or other damage. The rear chassis extension and continental kit are also in excellent condition. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) The black fabric top is properly fitted and free of imperfections. The classic chrome Buick front bumper, grille, and headlight bezels retain excellent shine with no indication of any impact damage and negligible patina. The "checkmark” chrome body-side trim, chrome cabin-glass trim, chrome mirrors, and chrome rear bumper with overrider bar share the same condition. Bespoke factory badging includes the “V” hood ornament, enamel Buick-crest hood emblem, B-u-i-c-k letters embossed in the grille trim, red-white-and-blue “Skylark” grille emblem, and round Buick-crest side emblem. CAbin glass and lighting lenses are clear and free of cracks. Chrome wire wheels with knock-off hubs and Skylark center emblems are mounted with Dayton® wide-whitewall tires.

The black-and-white interior is a perfect Fifties design statement. Upholstery is white-stitched black leather vertically pleated, with white trim on the padded upper surfaces. Door trim and rear cabin-walls echo the vertical black pleats and white trim. Patterned chrome inserts on the doors provide a backdrop for power-window switches, door handles, and vent-window cranks. A black 2-spoke, banjo-style steering wheel with full-circle horn ring and gold Skylark-emblem center cap frames the analog instruments backed by more patterned chrome which continues across the lower dash. In the center, the radio speaker grille hosts several pull-lever operating controls below the Buick-branded “Selectronic” AM radio. Black carpeting (with matching carpet mats) covers the cabin floors. The automatic transmission shift lever is mounted on the column. (Please view the close-up photography in the gallery to assess the condition of the Skylark's various interior surfaces.)

Under the hood, the 322-cubic-inch, 188 horsepower Fireball V8 in its correct turquoise engine-block and valve-cover paint commands a spotless engine bay. All stock components are present and correctly located; all surfaces are original. Viewed from below, the chassis and x-frame are clean, straight, and undamaged. (To best evaluate the condition of undercarriage surfaces, please review the gallery photos shot from below.)
