“The surprising Maverick: A new kind of luxury in compact cars” – 1973 Ford Maverick magazine advertisement headline

From Hemmings “Muscle Machines” in September 2009: “Grabber was an apt name for Ford's cut-price V-8 coupe: Maverick was grabbing for the low end of the performance car market..... Grabber was truly a trim package, nothing more: a harbinger of days to come later that decade. To its credit, Ford never pretended that it was a performance-car killer, even calling it 'more of a jazzy firecracker' than 'a superbomb' in its own advertising.”

“Even so, the Grabber package lent a sporting flair to the cut-price coupe, and today, three and a half decades on and fresh off another summer of $3 per gallon gas, the oft-forgotten compact Maverick Grabber deserves a second look.”

Offered here is a 1973 Ford Maverick “Grabber” that delivers the promised “big fun,” namely Ford's legendary 302-cubic-inch V8, here professionally prepped for racing. This rare, white-over-black Maverick, easily identified by its exterior red stripes and graphics package, shows 53,254 miles on its odometer, or fewer than 1,100 miles per-year on average since new.

The car's exterior white paint has been properly refreshed and shows well. The finish is uniform and glossy. The functional hood scoop is painted matte black with black stripes and red “Grabber” identification. This Brazilian “Maverick GT” stripe package includes red side stripes incorporating “Maverick GT” and “302 V8” identification, and a rear accent stripe surrounding the matte-black taillight panel and incorporating “Ford” identification. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Bumpers, door handles, front grille, and window trim retain generally excellent chrome finishes with minimal patina. Cabin glass and all lighting lenses are clear and free of cracks. In addition to the graphics package, factory badging includes F-O-R-D lettering on the hood and the Maverick logo on the fuel filler cap, much as the Mustang models had done. Polished, 5-hole, 14-inch, dish-style wheels are mounted with Cooper® Cobra Radial GT 225/70 raised-white-letter tires.

The car's interior is a blend of original look and performance upgrades. Original black, woodgrain-trimmed door panels (showing some looseness, and on the driver's door, some vinyl separation) remain in place. Black vinyl upholstery in the original horizontal-pleated design covers the front bucket and rear bench seats; black carpeting (with Maverick-branded matching carpet mats) covers the floors. The black headliner is complete but shows some signs of wear. A 4-spoke Grant® GT, matte-black sport steering wheel frames the stock dashboard and added gauges including an AutoGage® programmable tachometer with upshift light, and two auxiliary AutoMeter® gauges to monitor coolant temperature and oil pressure. A Hurst® Pro-Matic 2 shifter for the automatic transmission is mounted on the floor. (Please view the close-up photography in the gallery to assess the condition of the Maverick's various interior surfaces.)

The trunk holds the racing fuel cell, Quick Star® 275 electric fuel pump (with braided-steel fuel lines), and relocated battery.

Under the hood, the 302-cubic-inch Ford V8 wears proper Ford-blue engine-block paint. An open-sided, K&N®-embossed chrome air cleaner and Moroso®-embossed chrome valve covers add flair; an aluminum radiator, colored fuel-line connectors, and MSD® ignition components add performance cred. The engine bay is properly laid out and very clean. Viewed from below, the chassis is undamaged and complete. The clean underside of the engine and transmission, the impressive exhaust collectors, the three-quarter-length, oversize dual exhaust with x-connection, and the 9-inch Ford rear end are all visual focal points. (To best evaluate the condition of undercarriage surfaces, please review the gallery photos shot from below.)

While the more than 180 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '73 Ford Maverick in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

Not only will this Maverick delight the Ford faithful out on the track, its next owner can expect any number of blue-oval guys at cars-and-coffee meetups to make their way past legions of Mustangs to get a closeup look at this very special—and very rare—performance car.
