“SS. The super sporty Malibu” – Period Chevrolet brochure headline

“This is the one the driving purists think of when you say Chevelle. It comes in either sport coupe or convertible with all the nice things you get with a Malibu and then some. Things like a special suspension—a Sport Suspension that gives SS remarkable handling qualities on the road. Very firm. If you order an SS you have to specify the V8 engine you want. It's no problem. There's a 307-cu.-in., two different 350-cu.-in., a 400 -cu.-in. or even (and only on the SS) the famous Turbo-Jet 454. You want. We've got.”

“All Chevelles with SS on the fender come with power disc/drum brakes, a black grille, a special domed hood with lock pins; a left-hand remote control sport mirror (that, you'll really like), 15”x7” Sport Wheels and white-lettered F60x15 tires to grip the road. You can order things on SS that you can't get in any other mid-size car, like the Turbo-Jet 454 engine. If you're SS prone, you already know that.”

If ever there was a model deserving a tribute 50 years after it was new, it's the '72 Chevelle Malibu 454.

Offered here in iconic Hugger orange over black, is that 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 tribute. Professionally built and perfectly presented, the car's odometer shows 14, 976 miles.

The exterior Hugger orange, non-metallic paint is the result of a professional respray incorporating, in addition to the exterior body panels, underside of the trunk lid (and body edges inside the trunk), door edges, jambs and sills, and the underside of the hood (and body edges in the engine bay). The finish is perfectly glossy and smooth-as-glass. The dual white hood and trunk stripes are accurately applied. There are no dings, dents, or other damage to the body panels. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Chrome bumpers and other bright trim is very well-kept with negligible patina. The proper chrome hood pins are present. Factory badging includes the “SS” emblem centered in the black grille, small “Chevrolet” emblem in the grille, “Cowl Induction” emblems on the high-rise hood, “SS 454” fender emblems, and both “SS” and Chevelle-script emblems in back. All cabin glass and lighting lenses (including purple-center brake light lenses) are clear and free of cracks. Gray-centered, 15-inch, 5-spoke wheels with bowtie-emblem center caps are mounted with BFGoodrich® Radial T/A/ raised-white-letter tires.

The black interior is true to the original in materials and look. Door trim includes chrome trim, pleated-look vinyl, roll-up window cranks and “SS” badging. Black vinyl seat upholstery includes vertically pleated center panels on the front buckets and rear bench. Cabin carpeting and the headliner (showing some looseness) are black. A 4-spoke black steering wheel with “SS” center emblem frames stock instrumentation with a Sun® tachometer in place of the factory unit and three SunPro® auxiliary gauges mounted below the dash to monitor oil pressure, coolant temperature, and alternator output. A Kenwood® audio head unit replaces the factory radio. The grab-bar-style shift lever for the automatic transmission is mounted on the black console with a storage compartment to its rear. (Please view the close-up photography in the gallery to assess the condition of the Datsun's various interior surfaces.)

Under the hood, the non-matching 454-cubic-inch Chevrolet V8 (wearing correct Chevrolet-orange engine-block paint) is a sight to stir the performance heartbeat (of America). An open-sided chrome air cleaner (to allow cold air to enter the engine by way of the cowl induction) cover bearing embossed “454” identification, as well as similarly embossed chrome valve covers, amplify the performance statement. The zinc-coated brake booster, aluminum radiator, bare-metal Weiand® intake manifold, and exhaust headers are equally noteworthy. Viewed from below, the chassis and components are correct and undamaged. The clean lower sides of the engine and transmission, massive exhaust collectors, front disc brakes, and full-length dual-exhaust system with crossover pipe are all visual focal points. (To best evaluate the condition of undercarriage surfaces, please review the gallery photos shot from below.)

While the more than 165 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '72 Chevelle in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.
