“… perhaps the vintage 4x4 market's best kept secret: the Dodge Ramcharger.” -Motor Trend, January 2019

The Motor Trend writers continued: “Existing deep in the shadow of the Bronco and the Blazer even since new, the Ramcharger gets passed over for big-money builds and restorations, leaving the majority of surviving examples beaten and abused. It's a shame, considering these two-doors are handsome brutes with a similar brawny, let-your-chest-hair-flow vibe that makes the Bronco and K5 Blazer so popular.”

“The… SUV gave outdoorsy Mopar fans exactly what they sought: rugged individuality. The Ramcharger was ostensibly a base-model Dodge pickup that had nine inches chopped from the wheelbase and with the bulkhead and roof lopped off the cab. The truck came standard without a roof, but the vast majority were fitted with a heavy, drop-on, optional steel top with a flip-up fiberglass rear window; a vinyl soft top was also offered. The bed area of the interior could be covered in rubber or carpet.”

Offered here is a 1984 Dodge Ramcharger AW100, in silver-and-pewter over red. The SUV's odometer reads 29,531, which its Carfax would indicate has rolled over. This Ramcharger was a late-in-the-model-run example with updated styling and a non-removable steel roof. Originally Kansas-owned, the truck's well-maintained condition shows what owner care and a commitment to regular servicing can achieve.

The Ramcharger's exterior metallic silver and pewter paint shows excellent gloss and uniform, professional application. Body panels are free of damage; no dings and no dents. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Chrome bumpers front and rear are in excellent condition (with only limited patina), as are the chrome front grille, door handles, and West-Coast style, chrome side mirrors. Bodyside rubber trim has been well-maintained. Factory badging—including “Dodge Ram” emblem on the tailgate trim piece, “Ram Charger” emblems on the front fenders, impressive ram statuette hood ornament, and “Dodge” badge on the hood—is all correctly in place. Cabin glass (including the tinted, fixed rear windows) and lighting lenses are clear and undamaged. Aftermarket, dish-style, 8-hole, 15-inch alloy wheels are mounted with Chaparral® A/P 265/75 tires.

The SUV's interior retains an almost completely stock look throughout. Interior surfaces—carpets, door trim, seat upholstery, dashboard and more—all display excellent, damage-free finishes. Dark-red door trim is also free of damage or wear. Red carpeting covers the cabin floors; black rubber matting—characteristic of the “ready for work” look--covers the cargo-area floors. The red headliner is complete and free of sagging; a small pop-up window has been added above the cargo area. Vertically pleated, textured red fabric upholstery (trimmed in red vinyl) covers the foldable front high-back buckets and removable rear bench seat (with armrests). A deep storage compartment with armrest separates the front seats. A Grant® GT, 4-spoke steering wheel with wood-and-leather rim frames three large instrument openings on the brown dashboard. Instruments feature white faces and graphic markings are crisp. Included are factory-style analog gauges with two auxiliary gauges monitoring oil pressure and coolant temperature mounted in the dashboard to the right. Beneath the gauges are push-button heat-and-air-conditioning controls. The factory stereo radio has been removed. Two 12-volt power outlets have been added below the dash. The shift lever for the automatic transmission is mounted on the steering column and the transfer-case 4WD selector lever is floor-mounted. (Please view the close-up photography in the gallery to assess the condition of the Datsun's various interior surfaces.)

Under the hood, the 5.2-liter (318-cubic-inch) Chrysler V8 commands a clean engine bay. An open-sided, chrome air cleaner cover (with “318” decal), finned, bright-finish valve covers, and orange engine-block paint all add flair. Viewed from below, the chassis is complete and free of damage. Newer exhaust components are noteworthy. (To best evaluate the condition of undercarriage surfaces, please review the gallery photos shot from below.)

While the more than 125 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '84 Dodge Ramcharger in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

As Motor Trend noted, Ramchargers are poised to rise in popularity much as Broncos and Blazers have already done, often to financially out-of-reach levels. The appeal of these well-maintained, nicely optioned, utility vehicles will always attract Ram loyalists. In fact, the next owner can expect admirers to ignore decal-laden, multi-colored, overly macho sorts of newer off-roaders to take a respectful, admiring look at this Kansas original.
