“One of the best parts of owning a street rod, however, is not in creating a unique vehicle but in its enjoyment after it is completed.” – Autoweek, August 2007

Autoweek aptly described the appeal of the street rod: “… a street rod is a means of self-expression for its creator. The builder of a street rod is not confined to guidelines set down by someone else; he can be his own man, and the street rod can be whatever he wants it to be, as long as the basic vehicle was manufactured before 1949. The street-rod builder has the option of adding a late-model engine and drivetrain from any make of car. He can modify the suspension to give better ride and handling characteristics, and he can incorporate whatever creature comforts he desires. Air conditioning, cruise control, AM/FM stereo radios, power steering, power brakes and automatic transmissions are common. The result is an automobile tailored to the owner's wants and is a car with the looks and charm of a vehicle 40, 50 or even 75 years old. Just as the builder has options when it comes to adding the type of equipment he desires, he also can use as mild or as wild a paint theme as his imagination allows. He even can modify the lines of the body to suit his own design. The sky is the limit, and he can create without worrying about standards set down by someone else.”

Offered here is a 1933 Ford 5-window Coupe Street Rod in black over gray-and-black. Fully customized to very high standards of workmanship, power, component-selection, and materials, the Ford's odometer shows just 2,010 miles since the restoration was completed.

The exterior black paint shows beautifully across the entire car: excellent gloss, deep reflectivity, and smooth-as-glass finish. Limited alterations to the body make for an appealing blend of old and new. The beautifully designed '33 Ford radiator grille, side mirrors, hood, curved door handles, twin headlights, and drop-center front and rear grilles, and teardrop taillights all showcase fully refurbished chrome. There are no dings, dents, or other damage on the body or trim pieces. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Cabin glass is clear and free of cracks as are all lighting lenses. All factory badges have been removed making for a clean, somewhat sinister look. Custom Billet Specialties® chromed 5-spoke wheels are mounted with BFGoodrich® Advantage T/A low-profile tires. The open design of the wheels allows views of the disc-brake cross-drilled rotors and Wilwood®-branded calipers at each corner.

Inside, the customization continues, as does the high level of workmanship and the tasteful mix of old and new. Rear-hinged doors are trimmed in gray leather with stylish black trim pieces; cabin walls replicate the same pattern while the headliner is exclusively in gray. Seat upholstery on the front buckets and rear bench is gray leather with horizontally pleated black center inserts. Cabin floor carpeting is black with matching black protective mats. A stylish 3-spoke steering wheel overlooks the black dashboard. The stock center-location of the gauge cluster is retained, but new VDO® white-faced, classic-design instruments have replaced the stock units. Slide-levers control the retrofitted HVAC system. The shift lever for the automatic transmission is mounted on the steering column and a Pioneer® audio head unit is located below the dash. (Please view the close-up photography in the gallery to assess the condition of the Ford's various interior surfaces.)

Opening the bi-fold hood delivers surprise and delight: the surprise comes from the realization that power originates from a Chevrolet 350-cubic-inch V8; delight from the display of so many chrome surfaces and custom components. A triangular chrome air cleaner, chrome alternator, chrome coolant-hose cover, chrome Chevrolet-bowtie-embossed valve covers, bright-blue ignition wiring, bare-metal intake manifold, low-restriction exhaust headers, braided-steel air conditioning lines—all spotless and perfectly installed—make for quite a sight. Viewed from below, “spotless” is equally appropriate. Lower engine surfaces, tubular chassis, full-length dual-exhaust system, and the 4-wheel disc-brake system all compete for visual focus. (To best evaluate the condition of undercarriage surfaces, please review the gallery photos shot from below.)

The original factory-mounted identification tag remains in place.

While the more than 135 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '33 Ford Coupe in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

This '33 Ford Coupe will certainly be making its way to any number of car shows. And just as certainly, this black beauty will create its own car show wherever it stops. Its next owner will just have to get used to being the center of attention.
