“With the '69 Pontiac Grand Prix, John DeLorean defined personal luxury muscle” – HagertyMedia. September 2020

“On page 205 of Pontiac ad man Jim Wangers' memoir, Glory Days, there's a black and white photo of John Z. DeLorean at perhaps the height of his powers. The caption reads, 'The 1969 Grand Prix was truly DeLorean's car, with a little help from marketing researcher Ben Harrison, who suggested converting the full-size Grand Prix to the smaller A-body sedan chassis.' It was an immediate success and became the image leader for all personal luxury coupes. In an era of excess, the 1969 Grand Prix could brag about having the longest hood in the industry.”

“'That was John DeLorean's concept,' Wangers once told auto writer Joe Oldham. 'It was his idea to capture the spirit and essence of the old Duesenbergs of the 1930s. Great cars, very high-performance road machines with all the trappings of the luxury marques of the day, like Cadillac and Packard. He even insisted Pontiac use the old Duesenberg model designations, J and SJ.'”

Offered here is a beautifully preserved year-2 of the personal-luxury car, a 1970 Pontiac Grand Prix "Model J" in Riverside Gold (Code 980) with white vinyl top over Medium Sandalwood (9716L). The odometer reading is 8,800 miles. This is a survivor representative of the John DeLorean glory days at Pontiac Motor Division, a time when GM ruled the automotive world.

The refreshed exterior gold paint (a sample of which is included) has an iridescent quality; the finish is flawless, perfectly smooth, with a high, uniform gloss. The professional paintwork (including door edges and sills, trunk lid underside, engine-bay area, and hood) is impressive, with the color-match on the trunk lid the only notable flaw. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Chrome bumpers, center-front grille, body trim, and mirrors are excellent. Bespoke door handles show only light patina. The white vinyl top is free of imperfections. All factory badging--including the "Model J" trunk lid emblem--is properly in place. Correct 14-inch, styled-steel wheels with chrome trim rings and “PMD”- center caps are mounted with BFGoodrich® Radial T/A 225/70 raised-white-letter all-season tires. Both wheels and tires are in near-perfect condition.

Inside, the door trim is pristine: “GP” emblem atop sandalwood molded panel, with chrome trim and window cranks, and medium-brown lower carpeted inserts. The same looped-pile carpeting in excellent condition covers the cabin floors. Seat upholstery on the front buckets and rear bench is sandalwood vinyl trim with matching textured-fabric inserts. The car's headliner and visors are flawless. A black, 3-spoke steering wheel with the Pontiac “V” logo frames the three large instrument openings on the burled-woodgrain-trimmed dashboard: fuel gauge and warning lights, 140-mph speedometer, and analog clock. SunPro® auxiliary gauges monitoring oil pressure, alternator output, and coolant temperature have been added to the lower dash. An Alpine® audio head unit is mounted in place of the factory radio; vertical slide levers control the HVAC functions. The center console is home to the shift lever for the automatic transmission, added audio speakers and the lockable storage compartment. (Please view the close-up photography in the gallery to assess the overall excellent condition of the Grand Prix's interior surfaces.)

Under the hood, the 400-cubic-inch Pontiac V8 wears its original Pontiac-turquoise block paint, chrome valve covers, a chrome “400-4”-branded twin-intake air cleaner cover, and a polished alternator. All components—including air conditioning—are properly in place. Viewed from below, the car's chassis is clean and undamaged. The full-length dual-exhaust system is a visual focal point. Only light surface rust is present on some untreated metal.

The original identification and build tags remain mounted, and the sale includes the original owner's manual.

While the more than 150 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '70 Grand Prix in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

The fierce loyalty of Pontiac aficionados is well-known in the business. They identify especially strongly with the particular style, design, power, and panache of the Division's late-Sixties, early-Seventies offerings. Those times put an emphasis on personal automotive statements, and Pontiac delivered like few other brands. The next owner of this beautiful gold Grand Prix can expect compliments, not only from fellow Pontiac fans, but from onlookers who'll be drawn to it whenever and wherever it's spotted.
