“1970: The Year Ford Produced Two Totally Different Falcons” – Motor City Garage, October 2021

“How Ford ended up with two distinctly different products in 1970, each wearing the Falcon emblem, rightly begins with the introduction of the Ford Maverick on April 17, 1969. As Ford's replacement for the Falcon in the Detroit compact class, the new Maverick boasted ponycar-like long-hood/short-deck styling, an updated version of the Falcon's versatile unit-construction chassis, and a bargain-basement price of just $1995. As the Mavericks filled up the dealer network, the trusty '66-'69-style Falcon was continued with almost no changes for MY 1970 but only until the end of the '69 calendar year.”

“There was only one drawback to this orderly phase-out/phase-in plan: For its introductory model year, the new Maverick was available only as a two-door coupe, unlike the Falcon, which included four-door sedan and station wagon body styles. And that left a fairly sizable hole in Ford's economy-class line-up, or a perceived one, anyway. To plug it, the product people whipped up a stripped-down, bare-bones version of the mid-sized Fairlane 500, slapped some Falcon badges on it, and sent it into production as a mid-year model.

“This 1970 1/2 Falcon, as the sales folders described it, was available as a four-door sedan, four-door wagon, or a two-door pillared coupe. Since it was built on the intermediate Fairlane/Torino platform, this Falcon boasted a longer 117-inch wheelbase. And even more interesting, it could be ordered with the full slate of Fairlane/Torino driveline options…. This mildly confusing product alignment didn't last long, however. For 1971, the Maverick became available as a four-door and meanwhile, the Fairlane and Falcon names were dropped. All the Ford mid-sized models for 1971 wore Torino badges.”

Offered here is a 1970 Ford Falcon Station Wagon in its original Medium Ivy Green Metallic over black, a true survivor of what is a rare Ford automobile. Built at the Atlanta Ford plant and sold originally at Adcock Motors in Adairsville, Georgia and now showing 94,264 miles on its odometer, the car has traveled fewer than 1,850 miles per-year on average since new. Nicely optioned but not "loaded," the wagon has the added appeal of being powered by the well-loved Ford 302 V8. A Deluxe Marti® Report documents the car's original equipment; the report is included in the sale with a photo included in the gallery for reference.

The original exterior Ivy Green paint has been maintained and shows well for its age. The gloss is even, with some wear-through on the tailgate and overall light fading and age-appropriate patina. There is a dent on the driver's door, but no other significant damage to the sheet-metal body panels. Chrome bumpers and trim are in excellent condition with very little patina. The Torino-style, blackout front grille is unaltered. No luggage rack or rails spoil the car's long-roof, slick-top appearance; a chin spoiler has been added In front. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Cabin glass and all lighting lenses are clear and undamaged. Factory badging—including the “Ford” hood emblem, “Falcon” rear-fender emblems, and one of each of these emblems on the tailgate—is all in place. Ford period-correct, 14-inch styled-steel wheels are mounted with Cooper® Cobra Radial G/T raised-white-letter tires.

The stock interior is in very well-maintained, original condition. Matching black-vinyl door trim on all four doors includes chrome window cranks. Floors are covered in stock rubber matting with a solid rubber floor in the cargo area. The black headliner is free of sagging. Black-vinyl trimmed upholstery (free of rips or tears) covers the front and rear bench seats. A 3-spoke, Ford-emblem, sport steering wheel with wood-look rim frames the stock instrument panel including 120-mph speedometer and analog gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. Slide-lever controls for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning are located to the right, above the Philco® push-button AM radio. The shift lever for the automatic transmission is mounted on the steering column. (Please view the close-up photography in the gallery to assess the overall excellent condition of the Falcon's interior surfaces.)

Under the hood, the 302-cubic-inch Ford V8 wears its original blue paint and identification. The engine bay is clean and free of performance modifications. Components—including air conditioning—are properly mounted. Viewed from below, the undercarriage is complete and undamaged. The very clean lower engine and transmission surfaces and the full-length dual-exhaust system are visual focal points. Very light surface rust is limited to some untreated metal.

The Falcon's original identification and information tags remain as mounted at the factory. The sale includes the owner's manual and related literature, as well as the Deluxe Marti Report mentioned earlier.
