“This year (1968) might be most remembered by the omission of the convertible from the lineup, but the Continental coupe and sedan added even more safety features that blended in styling from 1965. Wraparound signal lights at all four corners passed muster with federal safety standards. A finely textured grille with rectangular slots lay below the header panel with its integral Continental star (i.e., no more hood ornament) and the rear lights sported a similar level of detail in their metal overlay.”

“1968 also brought significant interior changes: a revised instrument panel/radio/HVAC controls with wood-tone trim instead of aluminum, and a new steering wheel that was unique to Continental. Front-seat headrests, a remote-controlled right-hand sideview mirror, finned wheel covers, and a defogging rear window joined the options list. Personalized customization continued with the choice of 22 exterior colors, three vinyl roof colors, Chalfonte knit fabric in four colors, brocade Limoges brocade fabric in six, and 10 shades of leather (a range reduced to four when ordering 40/20/40 seats). Only 29,719 sedans and 9415 coupes were sold this year.”

Offered here is a 1968 Lincoln Continental 4-Door sedan—white-and-blue over dark blue—in repainted, driver-quality, survivor condition. Showing 79,632 miles on its odometer, or roughly 1,500 miles per-year on average since new, this is an unrestored vehicle.

The condition of the resprayed exterior paint is inconsistent. Fading and dulling are issues particularly on the white-painted surfaces. The blue, a non-stock color, is in better condition. While there is no obvious accident damage, there is a minor dent near the corner on the left-rear fender, and there are indications of serious rust ahead of the right-rear fender. Chrome finishes show patina and pitting. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) 'Center-opening” a.k.a., “suicide doors” operate properly. Cabin glass and lighting lenses are in good condition. Factory badging is in place with the exception of the rear-fender script-Continental emblems which are included but not mounted. All four full-wheel covers are present and thin-whitewall tires are mounted.

Inside, the dark-blue, diamond-stitched leather has seen better days: cracking is generalized and there are tears in the material in places. Blue cabin carpeting is in better condition. Door trim pieces are in good condition overall but show some signs of shrinkage. The headliner is undamaged. The woodgrain-trimmed steering wheel and dashboard are in generally good condition. Original systems, air conditioning, instruments, and push-button radio remain in place. The shift lever for the automatic transmission is mounted on the steering column. Under the hood, the 460 cubic-inch Ford V8, original to the car, remains in place. While the engine bay is not particularly clean, it is complete with most components—including the Continental-branded air cleaner and “Powered by Ford” valve covers—wearing their original Ford-blue finishes. Viewed from below, the clean lower surfaces of the engine and transmission, as well as the properly routed dual-exhaust system, are visual focal points. The chassis is straight and undamaged. Surface rust is present on most untreated metal.
