“We've got a mean streak.” - Chevrolet Z28 magazine ad

That Z28 ad copy went on: “Z is for 'Zap!' Translation: a 302 V8 with mechanical lifters, high-performance cam, aluminum intake manifold. Holley 4-barrel. Plus: multi-leaf rear springs, heavy-duty shocks, new white-lettered tires on 15 x 7 wheels. And a Hurst shifter for the 4-speed. While you're at it, why not add the new 'Vette type 4-wheel disc brakes? By now you know the mean streak isn't just painted on, it's built in.” The Pony Car Wars were on.

Offered here--with even more of “mean streak” powerplant underneath--is a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Tribute in striking Hugger-orange-with-white-stripes exterior, over black. Showing 12,413 miles on its odometer, this “Z” is a perfectly fresh, lightly used tribute to the legendary muscle car that Mark Donohue drove into SCCA TransAm history, and it's ready for street use rather than occupying some dusty space in a museum.

The exterior bright, non-metallic orange paint on the car has been refreshed to perfection. The gloss of the classic Chevrolet paint is high and the surface smooth across all body panels. The bespoke wide white stripes—unique to the Z26—are perfectly applied to the hood and trunk lid. The way the stripes travel over the rear-deck spoiler is one of those styling details that quickly identified Z28s on the street. And the stripes here are properly applied, more widely separated on the trunk versus the hood. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) The blacked-out front grille, cowl-induction hood, and multiple Z28 badges are all correct for the tribute model. Cragar®-branded, chrome 15-inch wheels are mounted with 205/70 (front) and 265-/60 (rear) Radial GT tires. Cabin glass and lighting lenses are clear and undamaged. Chrome front and rear bumpers and limited chrome body trim all shines as it should. Body-panel alignment and panel gaps are factory-correct.

Inside, the interior retains a similar factory-correct appearance in all respects. The overall theme is black with horizontal-pattern vinyl seat upholstery, dashboard (with woodgrain trim), headliner, and cabin carpeting combining for a classic, serious-business look. A 3-spoke, aftermarket chrome steering wheel frames the three-instrument, square-design cluster showcasing the 120-mph speedometer and the 5,800-redline tachometer, with an analog clock in the center. The four, factory-installed, square-design, auxiliary engine-monitoring gauges are located on the front of the woodgrain-trimmed console, forward of the 4-speed manual transmission shifter (here with its ivory-white ball showing the shift pattern). Stock controls are present on the dash and an upgraded Clarion® audio head unit is present in the factory-correct location. Like the balance of the interior, the door trim—including correct roll-up window levers—is in excellent condition with no signs of inconsiderate use. (Please view the close-up photography in the gallery to fully assess the Camaro's excellent interior condition.)

There's a high-performance surprise under the hood in the form of a powerplant like no Z28 ever arrived with from the factory: a 454-cubic-inch big block Chevrolet V8. An open-sided, induction chrome air cleaner is mounted atop, with finned M/T®-branded performance valve covers, Weiand® intake manifold, correct Chevrolet-red engine black, and high-flow exhaust headers visible below. Every surface in the engine bay is spotless; all components and “plumbing” are properly mounted and routed. Viewed from below, the car's chassis is clean and undamaged. The high-performance dual exhaust (with cross-over) is free of any signs of too-aggressive driving or track use. Minimal surface rust is present on some untreated metal surfaces as would be expected.

While the more than 165 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '69 Camaro in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

In their 2009 article, Motor Trend writers summed up the legendary '69, first of the second-generation Z28s: “The Z/28 truly came into its own in 1969. 'News of Roger (Penske) and Mark (Donohue's) Trans-Am expedition has finally reached the Chevrolet marketing minions,' noted Sports Car Graphic, 'and they've caught the fever.' After two years of racing and dozens of magazine road tests, Chevrolet marketing was finally getting behind the Z/28 and carrying the word from Detroit to dealers nationwide.” The legendary Z28 was well on its way into Chevrolet history, and into the hearts of legions of fans… one of whom is probably reading this right now and imagining enjoying this 454-augmented Tribute Z28 out on the road where it belongs.
