“Chevy Trucks. Tough and Tightfisted.” -Period Chevrolet truck magazine advertisement

The above-quoted magazine ad went onto trumpet the Chevy pickup's computer-matched brakes (“front disc brakes and finned-drum rear brakes are automatically computer-matched to gross vehicle weight”); tough ladder-type frame (“design allows low cab mounting, easy entry”); counter-angled rear shocks (“to help reduce brake and power hop”); long vehicle life (“95.7% of all Chevy trucks in the ten most recent model years were still on the job.”); and longer service intervals (30,000 miles between spark plug changes, 7,500 miles between oil changes and chassis lubrication, 30,000 miles between air cleaner elements). The ad summed it all up with the Chevy truck theme: "Built to Stay Tough."

The '84 Chevy K20 offered here is compelling proof of truth in advertising: a lifted, refreshed, nicely upgraded, 35 year-old classic 4WD Chevy pickup that looks nowhere near its age. It didn't just “stay tough,” this truck got a lot tougher! The charcoal gray, believed-original paint on the properly lifted body is complemented by a light-gray theme inside. The odometer on the truck reads 32,217 miles.

The truck's exterior charcoal gray metallic paint shows very well overall, with light fading noted on the hood as the most significant imperfection. All other body panels display even gloss and an absence of significant scratches, dings, or dents. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) The chrome bumper in front is in near-perfect condition, while the rear step-bumper shows some patina from use; chrome wheel-arch and body-side trim (both in excellent condition) add flair. A windshield visor roof-extension (matching the body color) with amber marker lights has been fitted. The truck's stock front grille shows only one vertical bit of trim missing. All other factory chrome trim is in place and in excellent condition. Tubular, chrome side-entry-assist steps have been added and a diamond-plate lockable tool chest is mounted forward, atop the rear-cargo area. The cargo-box floors and fender tops (including the tailgate) are protected with urethane liners while the top sides of the cargo area walls have diamond-plate protection. All factory badges and emblems are in place including the gold bowtie front-grille emblem, “Custom DeLuxe 20” front-fender emblems, and the tailgate “Chevrolet” embossing. Premium MT®-branded, 8-hole, 16-inch aluminum wheels are mounted with Mickey Thompson® LT315/17 Baja MTZ outline-white-letter tires.

Inside the cab, the stock interior look has been maintained and properly cared-for. Gray door trim includes roll-up window handles and cloth inserts. The stock, 2-spoke Chevrolet-bowtie-branded steering wheel in black frames a soft-covered gray dash. A Pioneer® audio head unit is mounted in the factory-radio location; stock slide-lever controls for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning remain in place. A switch on the dash controls the twin-fuel-tank flow. The bench seat is upholstered in a well-maintained, tweed-weave-style gray fabric with matching-color vinyl trim. (Please view the close-up photography in the gallery to assess the condition of the K20's interior surfaces close-up.) The shift lever for the automatic-transmission shifter is mounted on the steering column while a separate transfer-case lever is floor-mounted on black. Cabin floors are covered in factory gray carpeting which is free of excessive wear. The cab features a sliding rear-window with an anti-intrusion grate installed.

Under the hood is a 5.7-liter V8 with blue-painted engine block and valve covers, and a chrome cover on the open-sided air cleaner air-cleaner cover. The engine bay is clean and tidy; components (including air conditioning), wiring, and plumbing are all properly in place. Viewed from below, the lifted suspension components, the exhaust headers, and full-length, properly routed dual-exhaust system steal the show. There is no evidence of suspension or component damage. Most metal surfaces have been treated with rust-inhibitor so only very light surface rust is present on untreated metal.

While the more than 130 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '84 Chevy K20 pickup in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

Hagerty Media praised these third-generation trucks: “Whether Chevrolet or GMC, the General's third-generation, “square-body” trucks were a dramatic departure from the company's previous efforts. The third-gen models featured squared-off front and rear fascias, subtle body contours honed by wind-tunnel testing, a more accommodating and ergonomic interior… a style decades ahead of its time.”

This '84 charcoal-gray K20 is in-the-metal proof of that “ahead of its time” point. It's also proof of Chevy's “Built Tough to Stay Tough” period claim.
