“When properly equipped, station wagons can haul far more than groceries, kids, dogs and lumber. “ – Hemmings “Find of the Day” 1969 Chevrolet Kingswood, February 2015

A magazine ad for the top-of-the-line '69 Impala Kingswood Estate made the announcement: “Chevrolet introduces the walk-in wagon.”

The copy provided the details on some of the car's exclusive features: “Here's a wagon that welcomes you in the back door without making you stoop over to keep from banging your head. Now you simply walk up a step in the bumper and walk down a step inside. Then you simply turn around and sit down. Don't worry. We've slanted the back end to help keep the roof out of your way. Another thoughtful design is our dual-action tailgate. Its concealed door-openers won't catch a sleeve like an outside handle. Another: You can add headlight washers. Still another: Tri-Level loading in most wagons. Order a roof rack for load space on top, in addition to the load space you have inside and under the rear floor. Performance? One quick answer… is the largest V8 in its field.”

Offered here is an extremely well-maintained, rare, top-of-the-line 1969 Chevrolet Impala Kingswood Estate station wagon in medium metallic-blue (with woodgrain) over blue. A long-term Las Vegas car, the odometer currently reads 89,936 miles, or fewer than 1,750 miles per-year on average since new.

The car's exterior paint displays a light patina from age, but still shows very well. There are no dings, dents, or other damage to any sheet metal. In the same way, the side and rear woodgrain-applique body panels are virtually undamaged and unfaded. Chrome trim—including on the bumpers, roof rack, side mirror, window surrounds, door handles, tailgate, bodyside, and wheel-well accents—all retains excellent shine and surface smoothness. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) The “rear step” mentioned in the magazine ad folds down out of the bottom of the tailgate on the passenger side (it can be seen in the stowed position, folded into the rear bumper). Expansive cabin glass and all lighting lenses (including on the six taillights denoting the Impala trim level) are clear and uncracked. Factory badging includes the C-H-E-V-R-O-L-E-T chrome letters on the hood, italicized “Kingswood Estate” emblems on the rear fenders, and script-Chevrolet emblem on the tailgate. Factory 15-inch wheels with very well-maintained chrome full-wheel covers (with bowtie and “Chevrolet Motor Division” identification) are mounted with GoodYear® Invicta 235/75 outline-white-letter all-season tires.

The interior blue color theme is perfectly coordinated with the exterior paint. Moreover, surfaces have been extremely well-kept. (Please view the close-up photography in the gallery to assess the station wagon's interior condition.) Vertically pleated, blue-vinyl upholstery covers all the bench seating, including the third-row, rear-facing folding bench seat. The same material covers the door panels trimmed with woodgrain and handsome, circular fleur-de-lis (Impala) emblems. Cranks raise and lower the windows, except for the power-operated tailgate window. Blue carpeting in excellent overall condition (and protected with rubber mats) covers the cabin floors while the cargo-area floors (with rear seat—or seats—folded) are hard-surfaced in blue. The car's blue headliner is pristine. A 2-spoke, blue, woodgrain-trimmed steering wheel frames the horizontal-design dashboard, also woodgrain-trimmed. A 120-mph speedometer, analog clock, and an array of warning lights face the driver. Controls for heating and air-conditioning and the factory-original AM radio are located on the lower dash. The car came equipped with power front disc brakes. The shift lever for the automatic transmission is mounted on the steering column.

Under the hood, the original 350-cubic-inch V8 commands a stock-appearing engine bay. All components—including air conditioning—are properly mounted. Surfaces are clean but not overly detailed. Viewed from below, the station wagon shows the advantage of life in the desert: virtually no rust. The chassis is complete and free of damage, with new suspension components apparent on the rear axle.

The car's original identification and build tags remain as mounted at the factory.

While the more than 170 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '69 Impala Kingswood Estate wagon in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

With its unique rear step, the magazine ad concluded with the invitation to “Just walk in.” We'd make the same suggestion to experience the height of late-Sixties, family-wagon luxury.
