(Please note: If you happen to be viewing this 1986 Chevrolet G20 Van on a website other than our Garage Kept Motors site, it's possible that you've only seen some of our many photographs of the van due to third-party website limitations. “Many of the G20 models that Chevrolet builds are earmarked for conversion companies” – NewCarTestDrives.com

Back in 1999, the NewCarTestDrives writers reviewed the G20: “Oh, there will be smart alecks out there who will make their wry exaggerations about the… Chevrolet G20…. They'll say that with all its traditional big-van styling, (it) looks like something that should be in the Smithsonian rather than in a yuppie's driveway. Very funny. And very misleading. Sure, the (G20 is) a typical, high-clearance, high-center-of-gravity van that's not exactly sleek or aerodynamic in style. But remember that this van has a different mission in life. It is, fundamentally, a van designed for carrying people and cargo as effectively, comfortably, and efficiently as possible. And within that broad context, this vehicle is solid and consistent.”

Offered here is an attractively refreshed and lightly customized 1986 Chevrolet G20 van in light-blue-and-white over gray. The van's five-digit odometer shows fewer than 11,000 miles, likely due to its having rolled over. A “Service Parts Identification” factory-mounted label remains in place and includes the VIN and the full list of original equipment on the van. (A photo of the label is included in the gallery for reference.)

The van's exterior custom paint mimics the design of the van that starred in “The A-Team” television series, but in a more pleasing color combination. The exceptional paint work is the result of a professional respray that properly covered all body panels including door jambs and the underside of the hood. There are no obvious imperfections, and the sheet metal is free of dents or dings. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Other modifications (all properly painted) include slats over the van's rear windows, faux hood air intakes, a roof-mounted spoiler in back, a chin spoiler in front, running boards, and fender flares. Chrome bumpers, front grille trim, and side mirrors show well with only light patina from age. Cragar® 5-spoke, 15-inch, chrome wheels in excellent condition are mounted with Futura® GLS Super Sport 275/60 raised-white-letter tires.

The van's interior has been refreshed and tastefully upgraded. Steel door panels (with MixAudio® stereo speakers mounted) are painted blue matching the exterior, as is the custom center between-the-seats console (with cupholders above an insulated compartment). The entire rear cargo area, including floors, is painted gloss gray. The refreshed, high-back, captain's-chair front seats are upholstered in “gathered” gray leather (both seat cushions show some discoloration, but no damage). Wood trim has been added to the dashboard instrument surround as well as the console and passenger-side dash. A gray, leather-and-brushed-metal-trimmed, 4-spoke, aftermarket steering wheel is mounted, and the shift lever for the automatic transmission is located on the steering column. An Equus® oil-pressure gauge below the dash complements the factory instruments. Slide-levers control the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning, and an aftermarket audio head unit is mounted in the factory-radio location.

Under the front hood, the original 5-liter Chevrolet V8 is in place in a clean and complete engine bay. All components—including air conditioning—are properly mounted. Viewed from below, the van's chassis is complete, straight, and undamaged. The side-exiting, chrome-tipped, dual exhaust system is a visual focal point. Light surface rust is evident on untreated metal.

The factory-mounted identification, build, and information tags remain mounted.

While the more than 135 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '86 Chevy Van in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

“The times we have spent in our van have been our happiest by far.” (Lauren & Calum quoted in “The Rolling Home”). The truth is, there's something about a van that captures the spirit of adventure on the open road. Sound appealing? Get on board.
