“For the first time in 1937, Ford produced an all-steel body, eliminating the fabric roof panel.” – Hemmings, April 2006

The elimination of that fabric roof panel—long used because metal-forming technology of the time was unable to produce roofs without the “hole” in the middle—was a big deal at Ford. The result was a “smooth-top” look that distinguished '37 Fords, especially the coupes. Combined with other new style elements, most noteworthy, the handsome, slanted front grille, the 1937 Ford models were a design hit. It's no wonder that these now 80 year-old cars have become a sought-after starting point for the skills of the professional customizers.

Offered here is a 1937 Ford 5-window coupe in metallic amber-red over tan. As the accompanying comprehensive list of new components illustrates, the car has been fully, professionally, and beautifully restored, and upgraded into a high-performance, show-winning hot rod. The car has traveled just 1,216 miles since the build was completed.

The coupe's exterior amber-red metallic paint displays an even finish and high gloss across every Henry-Ford-original body panel. The paint work is superb and every surface—including door jambs, trunk-lid underside, and lower-body panels—is properly painted. The amber color was an excellent choice; the metallic finish gives flashes of reflected light to highlight the coupe's flowing, “5-window” body design, attractively curved fenders, and gracefully sloping rear end. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Original chrome trim and bumpers are in excellent condition; door handles, side mirrors, and taillights are individual works of automotive art. Cabin glass and original lighting lenses—most notably on the bespoke teardrop-design headlights—are clear and free of imperfections. The open-sided hood, blacked-out grille, and brushed-metal-finished Moon Eyes® water-recovery tank (with braided steel lines) mounted on the front bumper combine to add a serious performance vibe. American Racing® 5-spoke polished wheels and a distinct forward rake add more emphasis.

Inside, there's a satisfying mix of traditional aesthetics with serious-performance upgrades. As an example, the overall original tan-painted dashboard and vintage-look instruments are maintained, but a full range of performance instrumentation and QuickCar® toggle-switch controls has been added below the dash and elsewhere. The AutoMeter® tachometer is cleverly located above the windshield. All that is framed by an upgraded, chrome-trimmed, banjo-style, leather-rimmed period-look steering wheel. The Cheetah® SCS performance shifter for the automatic transmission is floor-mounted. New Recaro® leather seats with fabric inserts and AJS® 4-point racing belts are installed forward of a roll bar (painted to match the dashboard). Door trim has been eliminated in favor of exposing the mechanicals and decreasing overall weight. The trunk includes stiffening reinforcements, the relocated electrical system, and floor-access to the racing fuel cell.

Under the rear-hinged hood, the Ford-performance cred is on full display; the 514-cubic-inch, 650-horsepower Ford Racing crate motor (sourced from Ford SVO Racing) under a Holly® 770 carburetor and K&N®-embossed air-cleaner cover speaks loudly even when it's not running. (Be sure to sample its engine note at the accompanying link to the startup and walk-around video.) Other engine and component hardware—including braided-steel fuel lines, chrome fuel regulator with blue anodized fittings, aluminum Edlebrock® high-rise intake manifold, aluminum water pump, Griffin® aluminum radiator, and more—add plenty of emphasis. Viewed from below, the chassis is clean, straight, complete, and free of rust. Visual focal points include the built C6 heavy-duty automatic transmission, Detroit Locker® posi-traction rear end, aluminum drive shaft, 4-link suspension, adjustable full coil-over suspension, and more.

The sale includes a large 3-ring binder (with additional binders) showing all work done to the car.
