“… every VehiCross off the assembly line would be ready to compete in terms of engine and suspension; just add safety equipment and you'd be set for the Dakar.” TheDrive.com, April 2020

The review continued: “There's no denying that the VehiCross has presence. It stands tall and has a sort of brutish stance that telegraphs its off-road prowess. Unpainted plastic panels below the beltline give it a rugged yet toy-like visage. The relatively short wheelbase, at 91.8 inches combined with a stock height of 66.9 inches also contribute to the stout look.”

The reviewer went on to quote a VehiCross current owner: “This Isuzu is such a seriously well-thought out vehicle… I like vehicles that are very underrated. I like an underdog. You just wouldn't expect to see a stock VehiCross outperform a Jeep, but it happens.”

Offered here is an unmodified, stock, all-original Isuzu VehiCross S. This is a 2001 model, one of only 1,345 produced in the last year of the Isuzu's short 5-year production run (only three years for the U.S. market), and one of just 120 finished in Foxfire Red Mica paint (over black-and-gray). Acquired from Washington state, the SUV's odometer currently shows 139,280 miles, fewer than 7,000 miles per-year on average since new. Most important, the VehiCross' condition inside and out is exceptional, clear evidence of owner pride, care, and respect for a very special vehicle.

The SUV's exterior is a combination of Foxfire-red-mica paint with extensive textured and unpainted gray panels. The appealing body design is flowing, almost sculpted, and the mica paint reflects highlights perfectly. A VehiCross will not be mistaken for anything else. The body panels—including the gray-plastic, lower-body panels—are free of dents, dings, scrapes or other noteworthy imperfections. There have been no modifications to the exterior. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Cabin glass is clear and undamaged, and all lighting lenses appear almost new. All proper factory badging is in place, including the “Isuzu” grille emblem, "3.5L” front-fender engine badges, prominent “VehiCross” emblems on the sail panels, “4WD Torque on Demand” rear emblem, and “Isuzu” graphic on the rear-door spare-tire panel. The stock roof-mounted rear spoiler and antenna remain mounted. The body is free of chrome with the brushed-metal fuel-filler cap and two trim pieces in the front grille are the only metallic accents. The stock wheels, however, are chrome, 5-spoke, 18-inch, with “Isuzu” center caps, all in excellent condition (more evidence of owner care). GoodYear® RSA 245/55 tires are mounted.

Inside, the impressively maintained theme continues. Leather upholstery, combing black and gray, is free of damage with only normal light creasing, most notably on the driver's seat. Black cabin carpeting is in excellent condition throughout. Gray-and-black door trim features carbon-fiber-look panels. The left-hinged rear door cleverly incorporates the spare-tire carrier safely inside. A 4-spoke, black, Isuzu-branded steering wheel frames a comprehensive analog instrument array with 4WD indicator. The center stack includes the original Isuzu-branded audio unit (with cd player) as well as controls for the heating, ventilation, and factory air conditioning. The leather-trimmed shift lever for the automatic transmission is mounted on the console alongside the transfer-case engagement lever. Switchgear and all cabin surfaces are free of damage or signs of unusual wear.

Under the hood, the original and reliable 3.6-liter, 24-valve, Isuzu V6 commands a complete and clean engine bay. Here, too, no modifications are noted. Viewed from below, the chassis and under-body components are complete and undamaged. There is no evidence of too-aggressive driving styles or extensive off-road use; no frame members or components display any impact damage or compression.

The VehiCross' identification, data, and information tags remain as originally mounted. The sale includes all original-owner literature.

While the more than 160 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '01 Vehicross S in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

Just as their off-road test drive ended, TheDrive.com's writer recorded a chance meet-up: “A group with a few other Isuzus has spotted us and frantically flags us down. Parked up on a sandy hill with a handful of like-minded enthusiasts, Julian (the vehicle's owner) seems even more smitten with his coveted VehiCross. Contact info is exchanged, and laughs are shared. Isuzu hasn't sold a passenger vehicle in the U.S. in a decade, but this seems like clear evidence that the community around the brand's best off-road work has never been stronger.”
