“Toyota Land Cruiser wagons do nothing but go up in value.” - Hagerty, May 2020

The Hagerty experts went on: “Land Cruisers are endearing machines with uncommon quality and longevity. Toyota continues to keep things simple and focus on a 20-plus-year service life in an industry that rewards disposability. This is reflected in their values, which have also proven to be more durable than those of other SUVs. Regardless of model, even 200,000-mile examples still bring strong money, while low-mileage unicorns continue to set new records. But be warned, once Land Cruisers get into your blood, they can be an awfully hard habit to break. Not that you'd want to, of course.”

Offered here is a 1991 Toyota Land Cruiser (FJ80) in white over charcoal gray-and-black. Manufactured in December, 1990 and originally a California vehicle, the Land Cruiser's odometer currently shows 139,539 miles, but total mileage is unknown; the vehicle was declared “exempt from odometer reporting” by the Michigan Motor Vehicle Department in 2021 according to Carfax. Prior to that the highest odometer reading was 295,502 miles in 2020. What is known and documented is comprehensive Toyota-dealer-performed maintenance of nearly $3,000, more than $1,500 in parts alone. The work was completed in April 2021. Also known is the overall excellent condition—inside and out—of this legendary Land Cruiser, and the fact that these vehicles have no specified mileage limit if they're properly maintained and accident-free.

The Land Cruiser's exterior factory-applied white paint retains excellent gloss and absence of major damage (there are chips and minor flaws notably on the doors and body-side panels). Chrome bumpers and trim show well with only a scrape on the right-front corner of the front bumper. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Extensive cabin glass (including rear-side sliding glass) and all lighting lenses are clear and uncracked. All factory badging—including the “Toyota” front-grille lettering, “Toyota Land Cruiser” tailgate badge, and Toyota oval emblem with “Full Time 4WD” badge also on the tailgate—is properly in place. BBS®-style, 15-inch, white-painted wheels with polished rims are newly mounted (2021) with Michelin® LTX M/S 31x10.5 LT all-season tires. Mud flaps are mounted at every wheel position.

Inside, the three rows of seats are upholstered in a long-wearing, tweed-finish, woven gray fabric, which is also used in concert with carpeting and vinyl on the door panels. The condition of the fabric is very good (light soiling is present notably on the front-passenger seat cushion) given the Land Cruiser's mileage, yet this is precisely the sort of longevity of materials associated with the brand. Charcoal cabin carpeting—including the cargo area behind the third row of seats and the tailgate—is well-maintained. The stock, 3-spoke, black steering wheel frames simple but complete analog instruments (including a tachometer) with fully functional climate-control and factory audio systems located to the right on the unaltered black dashboard. The center console hosts the shift lever for the automatic transmission, the 4wd transfer-case selector, and a hard-wired cellular phone, with a storage box-center armrest combination located to the rear.

Under the hood, the venerable Toyota 4-liter, electronic fuel-injected, straight 6 occupies a clean and well-ordered engine bay. There are no indications of modifications and no evident excessive wear. Viewed from below, the chassis is straight and free of damage with no signs of extensive off-road use. The recent service replaced brake lines and related seals, and newer rear shock absorbers are mounted. The coil springs on both live axles are visual focal points. Light surface rust is present on some untreated metal.

The Land Cruiser's original build and identification tags remain mounted. The sale includes the original (and personally annotated) owner's manual and the full documentation of the recent service cited earlier.

While the more than 160 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '91 Land Cruiser in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

As the Hagerty people noted, Land Cruisers are sound automotive investments from a financial standpoint. As, if not more important, the primary reason for that is the combination of their stout build quality, excellent materials, and proven reliability to very high-mileage levels as demonstrated by this example. Truth is, Land Cruisers have no “pull date.”
