According to the brand's press people, there's a new Volkswagen mid-size pickup is coming in 2022: “The all-new Amarok will be more versatile and off-road capable than the previous generation. … it maintains VW design language, which is good news on the styling front.”
This is not that truck.
Offered here is a 2017 Volkswagen Amorok (the word means “a gigantic wolf in Inuit religion, said to stalk and devour any person foolish enough to hunt alone at night”). Imported from Mexico (and holding a clean Michigan title), this white-over-gray, 4-wheel-drive, diesel-powered, crew-cab, 4-door pickup truck has traveled 48,127 kilometers (roughly 29,900 miles), or fewer than 7,500 miles per-year on average since new. It's guaranteed to be the only one on the block.
The Amorok's white exterior paint retains its factory-fresh, smooth surface and gloss across all panels. The truck's sheet metal is free of dings, dents, or other damage. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) From the front, the simple, but purposeful styling shares some similarity to the same-era VW Touaregs. Flared fenders add strength and capability to the design; the larger tires fit comfortably under the flares. All cabin glass (including all four doors) and lighting lenses are clear and undamaged. All factory badging—including the sure-to-prompt-questions “Amorok” tailgate badge—are in place. The cargo bed has a sprayed-oned black lining, and a factory step-bumper is mounted in the rear. Aftermarket 17-inch, black-finish, 5-split-spoke Touren® wheels (https://www.tourenwheels.com) are mounted with GoodYear® Wrangler DuraTrac 265/65 tires.
Inside, the gray interior continues the simple, purposeful design aesthetic. Door trim is gray hard plastic, front and rear seats are upholstered in durable gray cloth with textured cloth inserts, black carpeting (protected with molded-plastic liners in front) covers the cabin floors, and in a delightful change from video-game graphics so common today, the instruments are analog. Standard black-dashboard layout (including air-conditioning and heating controls) and VW-branded steering wheel complete the driver's view. The shift lever for the 6-speed manual transmission is located on the center console. An upgraded audio system includes an Alpine® head unit and JL Audio® speakers and subwoofer. A Garmin® aftermarket navigation unit is mounted.
Under the hood, the 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder TDI engine has benefitted from an APR Stage 1 Tune. (The coming 2022 version will not offer a diesel option.) The engine bay is clean, complete, and free of damage. No plastic shrouds are mounted. Viewed from below, the chassis is clean and undamaged with noteworthy, stout, factory-installed bracing. (Don't bet on that chassis-strengthening showing up on the new model.) Minimal surface rust is present on some untreated metal.
The truck's factory-mounted identification tag remains mounted.
While the more than 165 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '17 VW Amorok in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.
There is an undeniable appeal to this function-over-form Amorok from south of the border, especially with the added audio system and off-road tires. Add to that the desirability of the only-one-in-your-town cred, and we're confident we won't have the pleasure of parking this VW here for long. Get it while you can.
