“Long before the Ford Raptor was a thing, the Ford Bronco was the Blue Oval's off-road icon.” -Car and Driver, July 2020

The Ford.com website describes these Broncos: “For Generation 4, the previous years' trend toward aerodynamic design forged ahead, with sculpted edges (both inside and out) replacing boxy corners. On the engineering side, new powertrain and safety updates took center stage. Affectionately known in enthusiast circles as the 'brick nose,' the 1987 Bronco boasted a more aerodynamic silhouette than its 'bull nose' predecessors. Right angles and jutting edges gave way to dynamic sloping lines for the body, bumpers and mirrors, and headlights were flush with the front end. A revamped interior featured rounded surfaces in the dashboard, instrument cluster and climate controls.”

The 1987 Bronco offered here in black over red is a well-maintained, fourth-generation, nicely refreshed, and lifted Bronco. With 88,991 total miles (or a very conservative roughly 2,700 miles per-year on average), the truck has been respectfully owned, properly refreshed and well-maintained.

The black exterior paint on the Bronco has been well-maintained. The finish is excellent across all body panels, including the fiberglass, removable (sorta… it weighs 600 pounds) roof and the truck's tailgate, with no signs of fading, wear, or damage. Body panels are straight, free of dents, and show no sign of any replacement. Panel gaps are consistent; sheet metal is free of damage. Factory-installed, chrome “West Coast”-style side mirrors are mounted. Aftermarket, heavy-gauge bumpers incorporate chrome and black-painted finishes (the front grille includes driving lights) and are in excellent condition. The Bronco's chrome grille, windshield surround, fender-edge trim retain close-to-new shine; the tailgate brushed-metal trim piece is free of dings and dents. Lighting lenses are clear and undamaged. All factory emblems and badging—including “4x4” on below the front grille, “Bronco XLT” badges on the fenders, and blue-oval Ford logo badges front and rear—is properly in place. Lighting lenses and cabin glass are clear and undamaged. Polished-aluminum wheels are mounted with fresh Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ outline-white-letter 35x12.50 all—terrain tires.

Interior surfaces—including the red dash, original red-velour upholstery on the front high-back buckets and (removable) rear bench seat, and door panels—are clean and have been well cared-for. A stock black steering wheel frames the woodgrain-trimmed instrument cluster. Woodgrain trim extends across the face of the red dash. The B&M® Star Shifter automatic-transmission shifter is floor-mounted, as is the 4-wheel drive transfer case selector. The stock AM-FM-cassette radio remains mounted; HVAC controls are located just above. A deep lockable storage compartment separates the front seats. Cabin glass is clear and free of damage. Red carpeting throughout has been well cared for generally, but the rear-seat and the cargo area show carpet wear and staining.

Under the hood, the truck's engine bay is complete and very clean. The 5.0-liter Ford V8 sports an open-sided Edelbrock®-branded finned-aluminum air cleaner, bare-metal manifold, and Ford Performance-branded polished aluminum valve covers. All components—including air conditioning—are properly mounted. Viewed from below, the truck's undercarriage is clean with the factory protective reinforcing plate over the transfer case still mounted; the exhaust system shows no signs of abusive or too-aggressive driving (compressed pipes, for example). Rust-inhibiting spray has been applied to most chassis surfaces.

While the more than 135 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '87 Bronco XLT in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions

With the arrival of the smaller 2021 Bronco, interest in its larger predecessors has risen dramatically. These earlier, classic SUVs deliver everyday usefulness and comfort in a well-designed and appealing full-size package. (It's no wonder they were such an integral part of imaginary internet star, John Bronco's, success; search YouTube for “John Bronco” if you haven't met him.) This well cared for, lifted '87 black Bronco XLT is 100% trail-capable. And 100% comfortable. John Bronco will be proud of its new owner.
