“Take a hint from the guys at Indy. Maybe they know something you don't.” – 1969 Camaro Pace Car Edition 2-page advertisement in Life magazine.

The advertising copy followed with details: “Why is the Camaro the pace car again? Because it's the Hugger. Camaro has been named the Official Pace Car in the Indianapolis 500 for the second time in three years—a 50-year record! If you haven't driven 'the Hugger,' take a hint from the guys at Indy. Camaro SS has what it takes. Again this year, it'll lead the pack at Indy. Engine choices start with a 300-hp 350-cu.in. V8 and run up through a 325-hp 396-cu.in. job. There's even a new hood you can order with a super scoop intake that opens on acceleration, ramming cooler air into the engine for more power. This Hugger offers the widest tread of any sportster at its price. It comes on strong with wide oval tires on 14 x 7-inch-wide wheels and a beefed up suspension. The transmission is a special 3-speed floor shift. For those who want still more, there's a 4-speed available with a Hurst shifter. Indy's tough. So's Camaro SS.”

Offered here in its bespoke white with orange stripes over orange-and-black houndstooth (under a white fabric soft top) is a comprehensively nut-and-bolt-restored 1969 Camaro SS 396 Indy Pace Car Edition Convertible. This is a true “Z11” coded car as indicated on its build tag. Showing only 20,645 original miles on its odometer currently. One of just 3,675 produced, this is a rare, full-spec '69 Camaro SS Pace Car Edition in virtually as-new condition.

The exterior white paint has an even finish and excellent gloss. There is no damage anywhere to the paint, trim, or to any sheet metal. The Z28-like, ram-air-hood and rear-deck orange stripes (the rear stripes correctly spaced more widely than those in front) are flawless. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) The white-fabric convertible soft top is as-new. All factory badging is in place and correct, notably including the SS emblems in the front grille, both front fenders, and the rear valance, and the “396” engine badges. (The only “badging” missing is the full “Indy Pace Car” door-graphic applique which was likely never attached to this car at the wishes of the original owner, a common request.) Factory 14-inch rally steel wheels with “Chevrolet Motor Division”-branded center caps and turbo-design trim rings are mounted with BFGoodrich® Radial T/A raised-white-letter tires.

Inside, the characteristic bright-orange color theme is as striking as it is appealing. Like the car's exterior, every surface inside the car is literally like new, free not only of wear or damage, but of even slight indications of use. The black-and-orange houndstooth-fabric on the front bucket and rear bench seats appears as though no one ever sat there: perfectly clean and free of any wear at all. Molded door trim is perfect, and perfectly orange. The wood-rim, brushed-metal, 3-spoke sport steering wheel with “bowtie” center emblem and red-white-and-blue trim frames the large, square-framed, AC® speedometer and tachometer, with four smaller square gauges located at the head of the center console. The original woodgrain-trimmed, push-button AM-FM radio is mounted; woodgrain trim also extends across the dash in front of the passenger. The shift lever for the 4-speed manual transmission, topped with a “cue-ball white” knob showing the shift pattern, is mounted on the woodgrain-trimmed console, also displaying the shift pattern. Black carpeting covers the cabin floors. Again, every interior surface is free of wear and retains its original appearance and tactile feel.

Under the hood, the big-block 396-cubic-inch, 325-horsepower V8 commands an original, perfectly clean engine bay. All components wear their proper finish, including the zinc finish on the brake booster, Chevrolet-orange engine-block paint, and black paint on the open-top air cleaner beneath the ram-air hood. Hoses and wiring are all properly mounted; nothing is out of place. Viewed from below, the chassis is similarly pristine. The performance dual-exhaust system, spotless lower-engine surfaces, and complete absence of even minor surface rust are visual focal points.

The car's original factory-mounted build-data and identification tags remain properly in place.

While the more than 150 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '69 Camaro SS Pace Car Edition convertible in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.
