“The performance bargain of the decade” – Car and Driver, April 2004

In the vernacular of today's hot-rod artisans, in which the Honda Civic has replaced the '57 Chevy as the canvas of choice, the word "rice" is the slang synonym for a Japanese car. You might hear a Dodge SRT-4 owner saying something like this: 'Who needs rice when you've got PVO?' Indeed, the Chrysler Group's Performance Vehicle Operations (PVO) has delivered a hot-rod compact sedan that's based on the Neon and may be the performance bargain of the decade. Last year, when the 215-hp turbocharged car debuted, we crowned it the king of the econo-speedsters….”

“There was, though, one major issue with the car. The lack of a limited-slip differential meant the SRT-4 had some trouble putting down the power. 'The SRT-4 was voted most in need of a limited-slip device,' we wrote. Maybe Dodge was listening, because for 2004, a limited-slip differential, made by Quaife, is now standard equipment. There are also 15 more horsepower and five more pound-feet of torque to go along with the added traction (230 horsepower and 250 pound-feet are the new totals).”

Offered here is a 2004 Dodge Neon SRT-4 in Bright Silver Metallic over Dark Slate Gray. A Carfax-certified one-owner car (purchased new at Elhart Dodge in Holland, Michigan), that sole owner amassed only 12,334 miles since taking delivery, fewer than 1,800 miles per-year on average since new. The engine was professionally upgraded with a Stage 3 MOPAR tune bringing output to 350 horsepower. Clearly, this SRT-4 was a limited-use vehicle, and its overall showroom-quality condition is a result. The Neon comes with full original documentation including the factory window sticker listing all standard and optional equipment (which is also presented in the accompanying photo gallery).

The exterior Bright Silver Metallic paint literally shows as-new. The superb factory shine and finish is consistent across the entire car with no flaws. Silver was an excellent exterior color choice because the many trim and design highlights in black—notably the multiple-opening front grille, hood scoop (with “2.4L Turbo” identification), and valance, but also window and side-mirror trim—really stand out. There is zero damage to any bodywork or trim; even door handles show no signs of use. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Cabin glass is flawless, and all lighting lenses are crystal-clear. Pristine, factory, 17-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels are mounted with BFGoodrich® g-force 205/50 Z-rated performance tires. Wheel openings allow good views of the red brake calipers and oversized rotors at all four corners.

Inside, the Neon's “perfect-condition” theme continues. Every surface is pristine. Very well bolstered front bucket seats with fabric inserts, similarly-styled rear 2-position bench seat, black cabin carpeting (with matching carpet mats), Dodge-branded, 3-spoke sport steering wheel, white-faced full gauge cluster (including AutoMeter® boost gauge), door trim with stylish fabric insets and speakers, brushed-metal pedals, center stack controls, and brushed-metal shift knob for the 5-speed manual transmission leather-booted shift lever… everything is as-new.

Under the hood, the Stage-3-tuned, 2.4-liter. turbocharged, transversely mounted, 4-cylinder engine produces an astonishing 350 horsepower. All engine and component surfaces are flawless. Everything is properly in place with no signs of wear. Viewed from below, the chassis matches the rest of the car for absolutely perfect condition. The 3-inch MaxFab® exhaust system is an obvious visual focal point.

The car's factory-mounted identification and data tags remain in place. The removed original turbocharger accompanies the sale, full together with the full aforementioned documentation.

While the more than 155 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '04 Dodge Neon SRT-4 in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

The magazine advertisement for the Neon SRT-4's launch was headlined: “Don't Blink!” An obvious reference to the car's remarkable performance, but it could also apply to this opportunity to acquire a virtually new 7-year-old example.
