“If one car embodies 1960s Americana, it's the 1965–66 Mustang.” Hagerty, January 2021

Hagerty summarized the changes incorporated in the 1966 Mustang: “Changes in the second year of production were limited, rightly so as the Mustang passed the one-million-unit production mark this year. You can spot a 1966 Mustang from its less cluttered grill texture, chrome hood moulding, redesigned gas cap, new wheel covers, an upgrade from 13″ to 14″ wheels (six-cylinder models only), standard 5-pod gauge cluster, redesigned side scoop brightwork and chrome panels over the rocker panels (deleted on GT). Federal mandates meant that the once optional reverse lamps are now standard. (The prior) year's extensive list of optional equipment was also present in 1966, with the addition of an optional 8-track cassette tape player.”

Offered here is a restored and beautifully upgraded 1966 Mustang Fastback in black over red. This is a respray from the original Antique Bronze and a full replacement of the interior. All other data on the car's riveted-in-place data tag and VIN indicate authenticity on all these fronts: year-of-manufacture, body style, standard interior trim, 2.80 axle, and C4 automatic transmission. The Mustang's full decoding is shown below:

The car's black exterior paint shows very well across all body panels. The paint finish is evenly glossy, and the trunk interior, door jambs, and underside of the hood have all been properly sprayed. Panel fit is generally within period-manufacturing specifications. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Chrome work—including the bumpers, mirrors, door handles, window trim, and taillight trim—is in very-good-to-excellent condition. The front grille is an undamaged replacement from a '65 Mustang. All badging—the F-O-R-D letters on the hood, the center-grille running-pony emblem, “Mustang 2+2” lower-fender emblems, “298” engine badge, and Mustang-logo gas-cap—is properly located and in overall excellent condition. Through-the-rear-panel Mustang GT dual-exhaust exits are installed. Cabin glass and lighting lenses (including on the new-for-1966 backup lights) are clear and uncracked. Chrome-trimmed styled-steel 13-inch wheels (with Mustang logo center caps) are mounted with fresh General® Altimax RT 215/60 radial tires.

The car's red interior is a full replacement in perfect condition, and it offers excellent contrast to the black exterior. Red seat upholstery in the classic, horizontally pleated design, covers the front buckets and rear, folding bench seat. Red door-trim panels with chrome accents are as-new; lower door-sill chrome trim pieces with Ford-script logos are in pristine condition. Fresh black carpets with embroidered-Mustang-logo protective mats cover the cabin floors. The Ford-Mustang-logo steering wheel in red (with chrome trim) frames the 5-opening gauge cluster (updated from the '65 model). A SunPro® tachometer has been added to the steering column with three SunPro engine-monitoring gauges mounted below the dash. The T-shift lever for the automatic transmission is mounted on the full center console. The red, padded-top dashboard has a push-button AM radio mounted; the passenger-side glove-box cover has the proper Mustang-logo emblem mounted. All interior surfaces are in superb condition.

The car's trunk is clean; ample sound-deadening insulation has been added. The battery has been relocated to the trunk.

Under the hood, a replacement 302-cubic-inch Ford V8, wearing correct blue engine-block paint under a bare-metal manifold, sports oval air-cleaner cover and finned valve covers, all Cobra-branded. Shock towers and supports are undamaged and components (including the aluminum radiator) are all properly mounted. Viewed from below, the car's chassis is straight, undamaged, extremely clean, and complete. The custom, full dual-exhaust system with crossover and racing style manifolds and collectors, the perfectly clean lower sides of the engine and B&M® automatic transmission, and the beefed-up drivetrain all compete for visual attention.

The car's original data and identification tags remain mounted. The original owner's manual is included in the sale.

While the more than 150 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '66 Mustang Fastback in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

Few American cars have held the attention and interest of the public and the auto enthusiast as completely as the early Mustangs. Since the model's launch was heralded on the covers of both Time and Newsweek, right up to the present day, these sporty cars capture some real sense of the American spirit. No wonder they've become such a valued collectible, particularly when they've been properly treated and respectfully upgraded in as stunning a fashion as this black-and-red beauty.
