“Time Machines” – Motor Trend, December 2010

Motor Trend's look hot-rodding Model As included this look back: “The history of hot rodding, just like the definition of a hot rod, is subject to as many opinions as there are hot rodders. But we do know for a fact that the American Automobile Association was recording speed records on the desert lake beds of Southern California in the early '20s. And although it would be a while before the type of cars setting those records would be called hot rods, that's what they were. When the SCTA was started in 1937, it wasn't to invent a new hobby, but to help organize the already-popular pastime. By the '40s, the activities taking place on the dry lakes and streets around L.A. had become nationally known.”

Offered here is a 1929 Model A Roadster hot rod in custom orange and yellow over tan and brown. Showing 20,000 miles since its creation, the car is a show-stopper with plenty of “go” to match.

The exterior non-metallic orange finish is the result of professional application. The surface is even, smooth, and uniformly glossy on the bodywork and lowered (drop axle) chassis components. The yellow accents—perfectly outlined with a thin silver stripe— on the hood are but one indicator of the high quality of the work. Extensive pinstriping on the radiator surround is another. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) Chrome trim—including on the headlights, steering components, side mirrors, original taillights, and hardware on the “boobed” rear-end storage box—is in excellent condition. Cabin glass and lighting lenses are pristine. Staggered-size, tan-painted steel wheels feature Ford-logo-embossed, chrome hub caps and separate trim rings and are mounted with Firestone® 155/R14/80S tires in front, Lexington® 235/75/R15 in the rear. The tan fabric soft top is free of flaws or wear marks.

Inside, a classic look--vertically pleated tan upholstery with brown trim on the bench seat--is matched with the same treatment on the door trim. Black rubber matting covers the floors while brown carpet accents the footwells. A simple, three-spoke, black steering wheel frames the orange dash and center-oriented instrument cluster accented with yellow pinstriping. Instruments are old-style VDO® gauges set in chrome rings: a large center speedometer (with digital odometer) and four smaller gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, voltage output, and fuel level. The shift lever for the automatic transmission is mounted on the floor. Throughout the interior, all surfaces exhibit excellent condition, the result of fastidious owner care.

Under the side-hinged hood, the 351-cubic-inch, 4-barrel, Ford V8 is centermost in a perfectly clean engine bay. An open-sided, chrome air cleaner and Ford-Motorsport-embossed chrome valve covers add flair. All components are properly mounted and all hoses and wiring are correctly routed. Viewed from below, the chassis is similarly clean, well-organized, and rust-free. The dual performance exhaust and transmission oil cooler are focal points.

While the more than 120 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '29 Model A in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

The combination of personal style, build quality, and performance make this Model A Roadster hot rod a magnet for attention and compliments wherever it runs. Its next owner can expect to attract a crowd.
