“How good are the Sonoma and S-Series? Real good. GM has created a state-of-the-art compact pickup, attractively styled and attractively priced.” -NewCarTestDrive.com, November 1999
The test drive was a surprise: “Call it high school behavior, but it was an honest mistake. It could have happened to anyone. A bit too much pressure on the gas pedal and my vehicle's rear tires overpowered the pavement with a resounding squeal of burned rubber. Heads turned to identify the source of the display of bad street manners. A Chevrolet Corvette? Ford Mustang GT? Dodge Viper? The answer is none of the above. But would you believe a pickup truck? Yes, and a compact pickup truck at that. In particular, a GMC Sonoma pickup….”
Offered here is a 1995 GMC Sonoma pickup in the always-appealing Ford Grabber blue over black. The truck has been fully upgraded, re-powered, slammed and air-suspension equipped, and customized with highest-quality components. (The full list of added features and components is printed above.) Show or go, this Sonoma is a standout.
The Grabber blue exterior paint was professionally applied to a very high standard. All appropriate body surfaces—including door jambs, cargo box, and under-hood panels—have been properly painted. The result is a smooth, evenly glossy finish in a color that is likely unique in the Sonoma world. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) In addition to the obviously lowered (and air-raisable ride height, other custom exterior touches include the simplified front grille, black-painted cargo area, a shaved tailgate, removal of all factory badging from the body, and the removal of a portion of the cargo bed and rear fender tops to expose the rear air-lift suspension components and geometry. The truck's body is entirely free of dings, dents, or other damage. All cabin glass and stock lighting lenses are clear and free of cracks. Boss@ platinum-finish 20-inch 5-spoke wheels are mounted with very-low-profile Delinte® performance tires.
Inside, the truck is an appealing combination of both stock and upgraded components. Fabric seat upholstery in two-tone gray is stock and has been well-maintained. Black carpeting covers the cabin floors. Door trim is stock with stereo speakers. The stock dashboard includes the original instrument cluster with a Terminator X digital engine-monitoring interface added in the center of the speedometer. Also added are controls for the air suspension, an under-dash-mounted oil-pressure gauge, and an upgraded audio head unit with Bluetooth® capability in the factory-radio location. Heating and ventilation controls are stock. (Air conditioning has been deleted.) An extra-long shifter for the TH350 automatic transmission is mounted on the floor.
Under the hood, it's all business. The LM7, 5.3-liter V8 makes a very impressive performance statement. (Again, please see the accompanying list of engine upgrades.) Front fender liners have been deleted. Viewed from below, the Sonoma's chassis and components have been treated with rust-inhibitor; only light surface rust on some untreated metal is noted. The custom 2.5-inch Y-Pipe exhaust system with Cherry Bomb® M80 muffler and the air-suspension components are focal points.
The truck's VIN tag remains mounted, and the sale includes the owner's manual and related literature.
