“… perhaps the vintage 4x4 market's best kept secret: the Dodge Ramcharger.” -Motor Trend, January 2019

The Motor Trend writers continued: “Existing deep in the shadow of the Bronco and the Blazer even since new, the Ramcharger gets passed over for big-money builds and restorations, leaving the majority of surviving examples beaten and abused. It's a shame, considering these two-doors are handsome brutes with a similar brawny, let-your-chest-hair-flow vibe that makes the Bronco and K5 Blazer so popular.”

“The… SUV gave outdoorsy Mopar fans exactly what they sought: rugged individuality. The Ramcharger was ostensibly a base-model Dodge pickup that had nine inches chopped from the wheelbase and with the bulkhead and roof lopped off the cab. The truck came standard without a roof, but the vast majority were fitted with a heavy, drop-on, optional steel top with a flip-up fiberglass rear window; a vinyl soft top was also offered. The bed area of the interior could be covered in rubber or carpet.”

Offered here is a 1984 Dodge Ramcharger AW100, the base trim level, in tan over tan. The SUV's odometer reads 134,336, a very conservative under-4,000 miles per-year on average. This Ramcharger was a late-in-the-model-run example with updated styling and a non-removable steel roof. Originally South Dakota-owned, the truck's overall excellent condition shows what owner care and a commitment to regular maintenance can achieve.

The Ramcharger's exterior non-metallic tan paint has been refreshed and shows excellent gloss and uniform, professional application. Body panels are entirely free of damage. Chrome bumpers front and rear are in excellent condition, as are the chrome front grille, door handles, and West-Coast style, chrome side mirrors. Factory badging—including “Dodge Ram” emblem on the tailgate, “Ram Charger” emblems on the front fenders, and “Dodge” badge on the hood—is all correctly in place. Cabin glass and lighting lenses are clear and undamaged. Stock, white-painted wheels with brushed-metal hubcaps (and front locking hubs) are mounted with raised-white-letter BFGoodrich® All-Terrain LT255/75R15 tires. The Ram has a mild lift kit installed.

The SUV's interior retains a virtually stock look throughout. Interior surfaces—carpets, door trim, seat upholstery, dashboard and more—all display excellent, damage-free finishes. Simple door trim appears as-new. Black rubber matting—characteristic of the “ready for work” base-model look--covers the cabin and cargo-area floors. Vertically pleated tan vinyl upholstery covers the foldable front high-back buckets and removable rear bench seat (with armrests). The factory black wheel (with “pentastar” Chrysler logo center badge) frames three large instrument openings on the brown dashboard. Instrument graphic markings are crisp. To the right, push-button heat-and-air-conditioning controls and the factory Chrysler-branded, digital AM-FM stereo radio are located. The shift levers for the 4-speed manual transmission and the transfer-case 4WD selector are floor-mounted. The truck is also equipped with power steering and power front disc brakes.

Under the hood, the 5.2-liter (318-cubic-inch) Chrysler V8 retains its original finish and unadorned look. All components—including air conditioning—are properly in place in a meticulously clean engine bay. No modifications are indicated. Viewed from below, the chassis is complete and free of damage. Frame and lower-body surfaces are protected with a rust-inhibiting coating. Light Surface rust is present on some untreated-metal components. A modest lift kit is properly installed.

The Ramcharger's original build and identification tags remain mounted. The sale includes the original owner's manual. The truck's binder full of maintenance receipts is included in the sale.

While the more than 140 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '84 Ramcharger

in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

As Motor Trend noted, Ramchargers are poised to rise in popularity much as Broncos and Blazers have already done, often to financially out-of-reach levels. The appeal of a well-maintained, nicely optioned, base vehicle will always attract Ram loyalists. In fact, the next owner can expect admirers to pass by decal-laden, multi-colored, overly macho sorts of off-roaders to take a respectful, admiring look at this South Dakota original.
