“The Last of the Hot Rods – The 1973 Ford Mustang” –Hemmings, February 2010

A September 2004 Hemmings article explained it this way: “Nobody's young forever. The lively, carefree teens of the mid-1960s settled down and took on adult responsibilities, some of them, anyway, in the early 1970s. And their poster car, the Ford Mustang, changed with them. By the time the latest Mustang debuted in 1971, it had morphed into a large, smooth thoroughbred that catered as much to luxurious grand touring as it did to tire-smoking launches. With their optional high-performance V-8 engines, numerous creature comforts, head-turning style and ample production quantities, the 1971-1973 Mustang… convertibles today offer a taste of the good life for surprisingly little money.”

Offered here is a very well-maintained survivor 1973 Mustang Convertible in its original factory-applied Bright Red (code 2B) paint over a Black Corinthian Vinyl (code AA) interior. The lower body is painted in black. Overall, the paint finish is in excellent, nearly showroom condition (including on the optional racing-style mirrors), and body-panel fit and alignment is at or above period manufacturing standards. The car was optioned with most Mach 1 appearance items, including the large, black, lower-front spoiler, the twin-NACA-style hood intakes and surrounding black paint, black hockey-stick-style side stripe, and rear-deck-mounted spoiler, also in black. There is no damage to any sheet metal or trim. A black-fabric convertible top (and vinyl boot) is in place and both are in excellent condition. Badging—the running-pony grille badge, script-Mustang badging on the fenders and rear deck, and the Mustang-branded gas-filler cap—is all properly in place. Chrome bumpers, door handles, wheel-well trim, taillight and headlight trim, dual exhaust tips, are in uniformly excellent condition. Tinted cabin glass and all lighting lenses are free of cracks or other damage. American Racing® chrome 5-spoke, 14-inch wheels are mounted with Cooper® Cobra Radial G/T raised-white-letter 245/60 tires.

The car's high-back front bucket seats and two-position rear bench seat feature Black Corinthian vinyl upholstery in a handsome horizontally pleated design; door panels are black hard plastic with woodgrain trim. The condition of interior surfaces overall is excellent. All the upholstery—including on seatbacks—shows very well, completely free of rips or tears. Black cabin carpeting has been well maintained. An upholstered armrest with cupholders separates the front seats. A riveted-wood-rim, Mustang-logo, 3-spoke sport steering wheel with brushed-metal trim frames the large speedometer, with the other large gauge opening devoted to various warning lights. The car is equipped with power steering and power front disc brakes. A Sony® audio head unit is mounted in the factory-radio location. Slide-lever-operated HVAC controls are located just below. The shifter lever for the 3-speed manual transmission is floor-mounted.

Under the hood, the legendary 302-cubic-inch V8 (in proper Ford blue) commands a very clean and tidy engine bay. Finned aluminum valve covers include the “Mustang Powered by Ford” lettering and a chrome air-cleaner cover wears a “302 4-barrel” engine sticker. All components—including the Ford air conditioning unit—are properly located with no obvious modifications. Underneath the car, the chassis is clean, straight, and undamaged. The full-length, properly routed dual-exhaust system shows no sign of the sort of damage that can result from overly aggressive driving styles or track use.

The Mustang's factory-applied identification, information, and build tags remain mounted.
