“At the sign of the Cat” – Long-running Mercury Cougar advertising theme

The year 2021 marked 50 years since the launch of Mercury's upmarket version of the Ford Mustang. Sadly, neither the model's run, nor the Mercury brand itself would survive to celebrate that anniversary. What does live on is the enthusiasm and devotion of thousands of Cougar fans. If you doubt that, take a look at the Cougar Club of America's “At the Sign of the Cat” website, home to more than 68,000 registered Cougars representing every model year. (Paste this link in your device's browser window: https://cougarclub2.org ) Among many interesting facts, the club has 24 regional chapters across the country dedicated to all things Cougar—from meets, to road trips, to classic-car competitions.

Offered here is a top-of-the-line, all-original 1995 Mercury Cougar XR7 in white (with a smoky-green landau top) over green. Over its 29 years, the car has been owned by only two individuals, both of whom clearly cherished the Cougar and treated it with meticulous care, the results of which show in its near-showroom-new presentation. Showing 60,534 miles on its odometer, the XR7 has traveled fewer than 2,100 miles per-year on average.

The Cougar's exterior white paint shows very well. Gloss is even across all body panels, and there is no damage anywhere: no dings or dents of any sort. Chrome applique protects the lower-body and fender tops. Even the bumpers are free of nicks. A twin tape stripe on the side of the body follows the car's horizontal design. The landau roof in green (with brushed-metal, over-the-roof trim) has been well-kept. A chrome, rear-deck luggage rack is a handsome extra. Cabin glass and all lighting lenses—including the full-width taillight lens—are clear and free of cracks. Factory badging—including the chrome cat-logo emblem in the front grille, the same chrome cat logo with “XR7" identification on the landau top, and the “Cougar XR7” and “Mercury” identification in chrome incorporated in the taillight trim—are all correctly in place. Original factory wheels (in very good condition) with special cat-logo centers are mounted with Michelin® Weatherwise 215/70 thin-whitewall tires.

The car's interior trim in green and white perfectly complements the exterior. By this point in the model's development, Cougar design emphasized luxury appointments. White leather-trimmed bucket seats with embroidered cat logos featured center inserts in green fabric. The same treatment is in place on the two-passenger rear seats. All upholstery surfaces have been very well-maintained and show almost no wear. Seat belts, the rear deck, rear-cabin walls, and the curvaceous door trim are all rendered in matching green, as are the multifunction steering wheel and dashboard. Stock instrumentation, HVAC controls, and the factory audio unit remain mounted. The shifter for the automatic transmission is mounted on the green center console with a storage box-armrest to the rear, separating the bucket seats. Green carpeting covers the cabin floors. Every interior surface retains new, or nearly new condition, and the look is very much one-of-a-kind.

Under the hood, the 3.8-liter, fuel-injected, Ford V6 occupies a clean and orderly, but not overly detailed, engine bay. All components—including air conditioning—remain properly mounted, with no obvious modifications. Hoses and wiring are correctly routed. Viewed from below, the Cougar's chassis is clean, complete, and undamaged.

The car's factory build and identification tags remain mounted. The original owner's manual is included in the sale.

One Plymouth, Massachusetts owner of a 1995 Cougar XR7 reviewed it this way: “Bought this 5 years ago for my daughter. Wasn't the right car for her and I was the one who loved it so it became my car. The feeling of the V8 roaring to life and pressing the accelerator is just wonderful. The engine purrs like a kitten. I love this car.”

Other 5-star reviews on cars.com included: “This is a great car,” “Most reliable transportation I ever owned,” “I love this car—I've had it for 17 years,” and “The last American muscle car.”
