“My '89 Pontiac Formula is so sweet I may hang on to it forever.” – Scott Oldham, Hagerty, September 2019

More of Mr. Oldham's sentiment: “You know the old saying, everything is for sale. And I have thought about selling the Formula over the years as my collection has grown and the values of third-gen F-cars have risen. But then I take it out for a drive with the top down, usually up Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu, and run Mullholand and the area's other twisty two-lanes like Stunt and Schueren. It isn't fast compared to today's cars, but man, does it drive sweet. Just like it did on day one back in July 1989. I think I'll hold on to it. Forever.”

Offered here is a 1989 Firebird Formula 350 in black-over-gray. The car is virtually entirely stock and unmodified. It shows every sign of having been very well-maintained over its life. The “Formula” model is favorably regarded both for its engine and its WS6 performance suspension. (“WS6” stands for “Wide Suspension/6 pieces,” namely 2 thicker sway bars and 4 stiffer springs). The car's odometer shows 55,655 miles, or a very conservative fewer-than-3,000 miles per-year on average since new.

The condition of exterior black paint is always a reliable indicator of owner care. Here the gloss is consistent and there is no sign of fading. Reflectivity is excellent. Another indication lies in the condition of exterior graphics, in particular on a car like this which has no three-dimensional emblems. White decals account for all identification. This Firebird Formula shows completely crisp and undamaged “Formula” signature and Firebird emblem front and rear, large “Formula 350” door identification, Firebird sail-panel emblem, and “Pontiac” identification on the rear bumper. All cabin glass is undamaged; the large glass hatch has been dark-tinted to avoid interior-surface sun-fading (yet another indicator of owner care). Lighting lenses—including on the pop-up headlights—are clear and free of cracks. Factory 16-inch, angled-spoke alloy wheels with WS6-branded center caps and “Pontiac”-embossing are mounted with BFGoodrich® g-force performance tires.

Inside, the combination of light and dark gray makes for a perfect complement to the black exterior. Door panels show how well the combination works (both shades of gray and the Firebird icon in black). Vertically pleated, light gray cloth (in excellent condition with the barest minimum of expected wear on the outside bolster of the driver's seat) covers the seats. Cabin-floor carpet (including the cargo area) is darker, charcoal-gray, again with minimal wear indication. The Pontiac-branded, contemporary-design, sport steering wheel frames four driver-oriented instrument openings including separate tachometer and speedometer, as well as two openings with various engine-monitoring gauges in each. The original push-button AM-FM stereo with cassette remains mounted in the factory location just below the HVAC system's slide-lever controls. An angled T-bar shifter for the automatic transmission is console-mounted forward of an armrest with storage.

Under the hood, the 5.7-liter, tuned-port-injection V8 appears much as it must have on the day the car left the dealer's showroom. (Of interest, 1989 was the first year the engine's performance was enhanced by dual catalytic converters.) The engine bay is meticulously clean, all components are present and properly installed, all hoses and wiring are properly routed. Viewed from below, the chassis is straight, complete, undamaged, and unmodified.

All factory data and identification tags remain in place. The sale includes literature including the original owner's manual.

While the more than 155 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '89 Firebird Formula in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

This beautifully maintained, low mileage Firebird Formula is ready to become its next owner's never-gonna-sell-it treasure. Expect plenty of compliments from the next-door neighbors, casual admirers, and Radwood enthusiasts that will firmly reinforce that “forever” commitment.
