“The Model A Ford is the perfect entry to prewar ownership.” – Hagerty

The Hagerty classic-car experts went on to contrast the Model A with the earlier Model T: “Henry Ford designed the T to be affordable and adaptable, meaning that many Model Ts were modified and pressed into service as farm or shop equipment rather than as personal transportation. The Model A, on the other hand, was less of a multitasking machine. It focused more on transportation—what we'd consider normal car duty—and boasted a top speed of 45 mph.”

For their part, in their buyer's guide to the Model A, the other classic-car experts at Hemmings cited a particularly appealing aspect of the Model A for today's collectors: “Virtually every aspect of the Model A has been, or is currently being, reproduced. It's not just limited to mechanical parts both small and large. Body panels, gears, lamps and even suspension components are available through several parts suppliers, many of whom have been in the business since the mid-1960s. A proliferation of national and local Model A clubs are a reliable wealth of information as well.”

Offered here is a lovely, fully restored, 1930 Model A 2-Door Coupe in two-tone tan and light yellow over light brown, and riding on stylish wire wheels in red. With its color combination, rumble seat, and outstanding overall condition, the car has a special charm all its own. The Model A's odometer shows just over 59,000 miles.

The tan paint on the roof (surrounding the black fabric center insert) nicely accents the lines and details of the car's body design as it “flows into” the lower body. The red-pinstriped yellow paint below the tan is a perfect complement while adding a stylish twist. Black fenders and black running boards, the latter sporting Ford-logo step plates, complete the look. Across every surface, the paint work is in very good condition, evenly applied and properly glossy with no dents, dings, or other damage. (Minor paint flaws are present on the paint and pinstriping on both doors.) Door jambs (including the metal surrounding the rumble seat) and inward-facing surfaces of the hood and elsewhere have been properly painted in the body color. The chrome finish on the radiator surround, auxiliary lights, door handles, cabin trim, rumble-seat-assist handles, and more has been maintained in very good condition with only light patina from age. Bumpers fore and aft exhibit the same condition. The blue-oval Ford-script radiator emblem and the classic Model A hood ornament are a bit of pure automotive artwork. All wheels (including the fender-mounted spares) are free of damage; their red paint is in excellent condition, as are the chrome center caps. Correct 4.75/5.00-R19 tires of a period-correct style are mounted.

Inside, seat upholstery is a very pleasing-to-the-eye, medium-brown tweed cloth. All the bespoke Model A design touches are present and in excellent condition: lighter-tan upholstered door trim (with pockets), simple, center instrument cluster featuring the bespoke, horizontal-rotating speedometer, black rubber floor matting, floor-mounted shift levers for the 3-speed manual transmission and emergency brake, and simple 4-spoke black steering wheel. No surfaces appear worn or tired. Out back, the rumble seat—sure to delight youngsters who have never laid eyes on one before—has been professionally upholstered in brown leather. Rumble-seat floor area is covered in rubber matting.

Opening the side-access panels on the hood reveals the 200-cubic-inch 4-cylinder powerplant in a very clean and tidy engine compartment. No major modifications have been made here. In the same way, when viewed from below, the A's chassis is complete and beautifully showcases (in near museum-condition) the simple, yet stout state of Ford's design and manufacturing. There is virtually no sign of rust.
