“Good Looks - Fine Quality - Thrilling Performance” - 1930 DeSoto ad headline in the Saturday Evening Post

The magazine ad went on: “It is easy to see why the finer DeSoto Eight… (is) so universally and increasingly popular. (This) splendid car definitely, and by a wide margin, excels in the four things most sought for in motoring: smart design, fine quality, outstanding performance, and low price. The power… is extraordinary great power coupled with flashing speed and serene smoothness… designed for amazing ability on the road. … a few minutes at the wheel of a DeSoto and the truth will be impressed on you that DeSoto is today's great value-giver….”

Offered here is a collector-grade, fully restored 1930 DeSoto CF with the powerful straight-eight engine. The tan-and-black-with-red-accents exterior color combination is simply gorgeous. Together with its brown leather interior, the car delivers on the DeSoto promise of “smart design and fine quality.” It is an automotive showpiece.

Across the entire body—from the gently sloping front fenders, across the upright cabin, and onto the beautifully curved trunk—the tan paint is in virtually perfect condition. The stylish red accents on the car's hood, flanks, side-window trim, and trunk add the perfect bit of flair, echoed by the varnished hardwood 12-spoke wheels with painted red hubs and trim. Graceful black fenders give the car a “planted” look. The car's visual statement could well have satisfied any of the high-browed fun-seeking characters in “The Great Gatsby.” The chrome-surrounded radiator with its script “DeSoto 8” emblem clearly makes a “This ain't no Ford” statement. Double-row chrome bumpers front and rear complete the elegant design.

Inside, dark brown leather covers the seats and door trim, with matching cabin-floor carpeting. The gently curved dash and simple, center-oriented instrument cluster (with lovely art-deco surround), together with the black steering wheel and floor-mounted shifter for the 3-speed manual transmission make for a driver-oriented statement. Every surface inside the car displays superb condition and feel. Indeed, it's hard to imagine the car looking much nicer in the original dealer's showroom window. Even the trunk cargo area features perfectly installed dark brown carpeting. The 88,817 miles on the car's odometer amount to just 976 miles per-year over the car's 91-year life.

Opening the center-hinged hood panels reveals the impressive, 207 cubic-inch, straight-8 powerplant. The engine is very clean overall showing only a patina from stains expected in a car of its age. The covers for the eight spark plugs are arranged across the top of the engine in a line like so many soldiers. The twin exhaust headers are of a unique intertwined design. The engine's serial number and firing order are cast into the block. Viewed from below, the chassis is perfectly ordered and free of damage. Rust-inhibitor protects most metal surfaces.

While the more than 135 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this 1930 DeSoto CF in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

The Saturday Evening Post DeSoto ad concluded with: “Look at DeSoto luxury… step inside and sense its roomy, restful comfort… the DeSoto Straight Eight.”
