“The Gentleman of the Truck World” – Curbside Classic, October 2018

The Curbside Classic writers continued: “El Caminos and their GMC Caballero twins held a unique place in North America's automotive landscape, being among the few car-based pickups to endure in a marketplace that was generally ambivalent about the concept. But endure they did – with nearly a million copies having been sold. Throughout the decades, the concept stayed remarkably true to its original intent. Along the way, these vehicles became known as 'Cowboy Cadillacs'....”

“'Caballero' was intended to complement the El Camino's own Spanish nomenclature – caballero being a Spanish term for gentleman (GM originally used the name on a model of Buick station wagon sold in 1957-58). Befitting its gentlemanly name, the GMC was promoted as a refined and distinguished vehicle for buyers who wanted the best of both worlds – comfortable cars and useful trucks.

Offered here is a 1987 GMC Caballero in silver over burgundy, in very good driver condition. This “cowboy Cadillac” shows 93,556 miles on its odometer, a very conservative 2,750 miles per-year on average since new. Its Carfax shows only one flaw, an accident with unrecorded damage two years ago.

The exterior silver paint on this combination mid-size car and pickup is in very good condition overall. The finish is uniformly glossy across the vehicle with light wear from normal use in the pickup cargo box. The lower-body black paint has been re-sprayed. Body-panel alignment and fit is at factory standards. The bespoke “flying buttress”-style B-pillars are perfect. The left-front fender shows what appears to be repaired minor body damage, likely from the 2019 accident. Cabin glass and lighting lenses are clear and free of cracks or discoloration. Factory-applied emblems—including the handsome “GMC” hood ornament and “Caballero” grille badge—remain in place and in excellent condition. Chrome bumpers front and rear, as well as the “eggcrate”-style front grille, are in excellent condition, free of damage. Door handles show some deterioration of their chrome finish. Factory-original 5-spoke styled wheels in good condition, with GMC center caps, are mounted with Hankook Kinergy® tires.

The interior color theme is 100% burgundy. Crushed-velour upholstery in that color still showcases the style of the day, although wear is evident on the seat cushions, bolsters, and armrest. Burgundy carpet covers the cabin floor. The Caballero-branded steering wheel and dashboard are burgundy; trim for the analog instruments is black, as is the trim panel facing the passenger. The shifter for the automatic transmission is steering-column-mounted. The lower-center-dash panel houses the HVAC controls and an upgraded audio head unit mounted in the factory-radio location. Portions of the dashboard and door trim feature burled-wood-grain trim. Options include power steering, power windows, and power brakes.

Under the hood, the Caballero's original 305 cubic-inch V8 occupies a properly equipped and complete engine bay. The under-hood surfaces have thankfully not been treated with spray-on shine products.

While the more than 135 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this '87 GMC Caballero in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

The rarity and uniqueness of the GMC Caballero mean good examples like this always draw admirers and compliments. So, why be forced to choose between the comfort of a car and the usefulness of a pickup? You really can have it both ways!
