“Is smaller better? Hitting 60 mph in 4.7 seconds is certainly a compelling opening argument.” – Car and Driver 2008 BMW 135i Short Take Road Test, February 2008

The Car and Driver road-testers continued to praise…

… the 135i's size: “…ever since we sampled (BMW's) European 1-series a few years ago, the idea of a BMW smaller than the 3-series has struck us as a beautiful thing.”

… its roominess: “… From behind the wheel in the spacious front seat—where there's plenty of headroom—the driver isn't aware of the 1-series' shrunken size. The four inches lopped out of the wheelbase are, however, noticeable in the back seat. Subjectively, the seats are slightly larger than a Mustang's back seat—kids will fit just fine, adults will find it acceptable as long as the trip is short.”

… its power: “Fortunately, there is no reduction in engine size or output. The 135i gets the same 300-hp twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine as the 335i. We clocked a 0-to-60 time of 4.9 seconds for the heavier 335i; the 135i did it in a blistering 4.7, with a 13.3-second quarter-mile at 106 mph.”

… and its handling: “Since the 135i comes standard with an M-division sport suspension and 18-inch wheels wrapped with summer-friendly run-flat performance rubber, the 135i rides much like a 335i with the Sport package.”

Clearly, the 135i is a compelling sports sedan, a present-day performance standard bearer tracing its DNA back to the legendary 1976 BMW tii.

Offered here is a recently serviced 2008 BMW 135i in silver over two-tone gray with the list of highly desirable, driver-focused modifications shown here. The car's odometer registers 96,880 miles, or a conservative 7,400 miles per-year on average. Its excellent condition overall demonstrates the significant difference meticulous owner care can make over time.

The exterior silver paint displays a like-new condition: even finish across the entire body with excellent luster. The color suits the size of the car and the design lines of its body. There are no noticeable dents, dings, or indications of road rash. Perfectly applied carbon-fiber treatments on the kidney-shaped grille-surrounds, exterior sport mirrors, and rear diffuser are without flaw; and they add a tasteful dash of distinctiveness to the classic exterior-paint color choice. Cabin glass and lighting lenses are clear and free of damage. Factory-applied badging remains in place and in perfect condition. The car's lowered stance offers a hint of its performance character, and the graphite-color, 5-spoke Vossen® wheels—mounted with high-performance Continental® tires—were an excellent choice on that score as well; BMW purists would approve.

Inside, the same exceptional condition is evident throughout a beautifully color-coordinated cabin; the only notable flaws are slight discoloration on the driver's seat due to use, and similar discoloration on the carpet near the pedals. Seating surfaces are upholstered in two-tone gray leather; seat bolstering on the front buckets is characteristic of BMWs and is more than ample for this sports sedan. Light-gray carpeting—protected by properly fitted rubber mats in front—covers the floors. Door trim is light gray accented by carbon fiber on the hand holds. Door-sill “step-over” surfaces are in excellent condition (this is often a reliable indicator of owner care overall). A perforated-leather-covered steering wheel (in black with BMW center emblem with thumb controls) wears the BMW “M” insignia (also appearing on the tachometer face). A large speedometer and tachometer face the driver; a pop-up information screen is located in the top-center of the dash. All graphics on instruments and controls are sharp and unworn. Carbon-fiber trim extends across the dash, and also graces the wood-trimmed console surrounding the 6-speed shifter. The car features push-button ignition. A surprisingly spacious trunk shows virtually no signs of wear.

Under the hood, the 3-liter, twin-turbocharged. inline 6-cylinder powerplant shows further evidence of owner care and judicious upgrading (in the form of twin high-flow air intakes). Road & Track described the engine: “The 300-horsepower direct-injected twin-turbo inline-6 feels just as it does in the 335i — divine.” The car's engine bay is nicely clean and orderly. Viewed from below, the lower body panels show no indication of damage or scratching from too-aggressive driving or track use. Indeed, the entire chassis is exceptionally clean and well-ordered, with no evidence of rust beyond that on untreated metal, notably the exhaust system.

The car's VIN markings are original and accurate.

While the more than 145 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this BMW 135i in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

The BMW 1-series really is a fit successor to the legendary 2002-series cars. Over time, as often happens, those 3-series cars grew in size and weight. In launching the135i, BMW took a lesson from the 2002 cars, and reverted to lighter weight with no loss of power. Sound like fun? That's the perfect one-word description for this sports sedan.
