“… 'restomods' are recognized as legitimate collectible vehicle classes today….” Original Parts Group website, July 2013

The people at OPGI continued: “A true 'restoration' is a vehicle that has been reassembled with the goal of bringing it back to factory-stock condition only. A 'restomod' job is defined as a vehicle that has been put back together with the addition of new modern or aftermarket parts that were not on the vehicle when it came from the factory. This makes a 'restomod' car with a combination of both factory original parts and some new parts designed to improve the performance or appearance of a vehicle, like putting a modern engine in it to make it more drivable, or painting a car in a new color that the original factory did not offer at the time of manufacture.”

Offered here is a restomoded 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS in silver over black. Presenting a generally stock look at a quick glance, this “SS” is more—way more—than could ever have been purchased back in the day. Showing 83,175 miles on its odometer, or roughly 1,500 mile per-year on average, the low-mileage platform was a perfect candidate for a top-quality restomod.

The Chevelle's exterior silver paint shows every indication of a professional's touch in the paint booth. The depth and uniformity of the finish is outstanding across the entire body. Panel-fit is similarly excellent. A subtle deeper shade of silver nicely accents the lower body. Originally a basic two-door sedan model, chrome trim was restrained (bumpers, grille, and wheel wells) so the beauty of the basic body style's design is uninterrupted. In the same way, all factory emblems and badging are in place, with two additions: the front-fender “454”-identifying twin flags, and the “SS” designations front and rear. Some might take issue with “up-badging” the car, but once the hood is lifted (below), all will be forgiven. The car's wheels are stock-appearing (but staggered-width), silver steelies with chrome “Chevrolet Motor Division” centercaps; performance rubber. is mounted.

Inside, tasteful and useful additions have been incorporated while the overall appearance remains stock. Upholstery on the front and rear bench seats is classic vertically rolled and pleated black vinyl. A matching storage bin with cupholders has been added in front. Door-panel trim continues this look as well as the “basic Chevelle” vibe; simple, reliable roll-up window cranks are in place. The dash retains the stock feel with tasteful additions including piano-black trim, relocated ignition, and retro Chevrolet look radio. MW® oil pressure and coolant temperature gauges have been added below the dash as they might well have been by hot-rodders back in the Sixties. A sport-style, wood-rimmed steering wheel with brushed-metal styling and a bowtie logo on a bright blue center is mounted. In similar fashion, a thoroughly up-to-date, drag-racing type, chrome T-bar shifter for the automatic transmission is floor-mounted. Cabin floors are carpeted in black throughout.

Popping the hood reveals a stunning 454 cubic-inch performance V8 powerplant. Any doubts as to the legitimacy of the car's badging are put to rest. Bright red engine paint, silver intake manifold, chromed valve covers, performance exhaust headers, all topped by a 454-identified chrome air cleaner. The engine bay is spotless with the location of all components, and the routing of coolant hoses and wiring exhibiting a craftsman's touch. Viewed from below, the Chevelle's chassis is similarly clean and free of grime or any sign of rust. The performance headers and custom-fabricated full-length dual exhaust system with cross-over pipe is another signal of the quality of the build.

While the more than 150 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available on the GarageKeptMotors website showcase this Chevelle SS in detail from every angle, including from below, we expect and encourage in-person inspections at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. Please call to arrange an appointment in advance as our showroom is not open to the public. And feel free to get in touch anytime by phone or email if you have questions.

Restomodding results in a very personalized expression of performance, so it's not uncommon for these unique cars to acquire an individualized name to capture their essence. This Chevelle has so far not been given a nickname, but if we were to offer one up, “Silver Sleeper” might be just the moniker for this outstanding “SS.”
